I wonder if every Wedding DJ now needs to get “approval” for playing songs at social events???

You pay for a license to use the recordings. I’m sure the proper fees were paid for use of all musical recordings.
The whining by the artist is symbolism, their permission is not required to play the music.

Yes

Either the DJ has to pay themselves, or they can sometimes be covered under the license of the venue.

The answer is yes they do and have had to for a long time. They even are supposed to pay royalties.
