Palin's Home Run
Wall Street Journal ^ | 9/4/2008 | John Fund

Is there still an enthusiasm gap?

Twenty years after Ronald Reagan left office, Republicans who have long missed him may have found a future Margaret Thatcher. If John McCain wins, conservatives may find one of the most enduring accomplishments of his term will have been what he did before it started: helping to fill the Republican Party's future talent bench with such a fresh and compelling figure.

Sarah Palin is a conviction politician, a naturally compelling speaker and someone who can relate to her audience on very human terms. America has just learned why Mrs. Palin enjoys the highest approval ratings of any governor in America.

Liberal commentators glumly noted the thunderous applause in the convention hall last night. But they could do precious little to attack. Even Keith Olbermann, MSNBC's official attack dog, could muster only this as commentary on Mrs. Palin's performance: "People who like this sort of thing will find this ... the sort of thing they like."

Mrs. Palin accomplished several things last night. First, she introduced herself and her story to the American people in a compelling and warm manner, complete with effective pictures of her proud family. Secondly, she praised John McCain's leadership, service to country and independence in a way that made him come alive. Thirdly, she effectively deflected the media and liberal criticism of her by saying they really represented an attack on the small-town and suburban values she grew up with. Lastly, she skewered Barack Obama with gusto but without meanness. -snip-

Some hard-bitten political observers I know were uncharacteristically impressed with the Palin speech. Hal Stratton, a former Attorney General of New Mexico, wrote to me as follows: "That's what we out west call openin' a whole can of whip a— on your opponents."

I told my wife, not just a home run, ...a grand-slam, out of the ballpark homerun!

And with a rallying cry!

All together now!

Ze-ro! Ze-ro! Ze-ro!

I had FOX on the 60 inch, Chrissy on in the bedroom 25 inch (or something like that) and in the sitting room--CNN--lol. We are a little obsessed in this family with both our Barracuda and how she was being recieved, but also aren't hurting in the TV department. I know a bit pathetic. So I watched them all as I have them all on recorder. While we were watching all of these reactions I was back and forth on FR. Man I am going to sleep tonight/this AM.

Honestly MSNBC was pretty lame and I only watched a few minutes (only watch for about 5 seconds usually before turning the channel). CNN (the only time I ever watched without wanting to throw something at the TV) was pretty Sarah friendly and a bit more engaging. FOX is on 24/7 practically in our house.

"People who like this sort of thing will find this ... the sort of thing they like."

Well, now, that's deep. Gotta be why Obermann gets the big bucks.

MSNBC was very riled afterward. A couple pundits made a point of repeating over and over that she hadn’t written the speach and another kept complaining about the sarcasm. Too much sarcasm (especially since it was so biting and true). Olbermann was restrained and Brokaw was very fair in his assessment. Brian Williams was upset with her and tried to throw a few digs her way - let see how she performs without a written speach type of thing. The same criticism Obama should be hearing but is not.

Krissy looked like he just got a cancer diagnosis. He was even pleading with Oberdork, as if to say, “Don’t you get it - we are #*&^ed.”

“radiance of a cadaver” LOL

I think she was a little drunk too. And not a happy lush either.

A bag of microwave popcorn: $0.50

A 12oz can of Miller Lite: $1.10

A DirecTV subscription: $49.99

Time watching Sarah Palin’s speech: 30 minutes

Seeing MSNBC commentators looking as though they just took a bite from a turd sandwich: PRICELESS

Pardon me me while I nip into the larder to fetch a tin of “whoop ass” to unseat upon you. Go Sarah/Maggie Thatcher

“She’s the spirit this country was built on, men and women who roll up their sleeves and get the job done ..the simple fabric of America, and this is what Alaska’s Sarah Palin is all about”

Amen to that. And the DemonRats and Drive By’s are simply stunned. Conservatives are energized like I haven’t seen in years.
I can’t help but overhearing some women in my office now who just got into work and are discussing Sarah. These women are nominal liberal types but loved her speech. I believe they will now vote McCain Palin. Amazing. She has reminded the nation of our God given abilities and character in the same way Reagan did. She has reminded the nation that Washington is the problem and not the answer.
Hooray!

Where can I get a bumper sticker that says “Palin,” but not “McCain?”

You don’t get 86% approval in any office without some incredible capabilities. Sarah 86. Pelosi 11.

Morning Joe had a McCain aide on this am, a very bright young woman who said she had a small part in the speech. Jay Carney, of Time Magazine, said Palin now has to answer questions from the press. That young lady totally destroyed Carney. With disdain she said “talk with you? Why? She talked with the american people.” She was much more forceful than I can recapture, but she shut him down completely.

My advice is let it go. Support the ticket and get over the fact that your perferred choice didn't win.

John McCain has vindicated himself with his choice of a running mate. Petty piques have no place here.

The irony of this comment coming from someone who makes his living reading off a Teleprompter is hilarious.
