Look at Kerry. He came reasonably close to Bush on the popular vote, but a picture of the electoral map was virtually all red. That is WAY removed from reality. Kerry came within ~100,000 votes in Ohio of winning the electoral college and the Presidency. But Bush defeated him by over 3 million total votes.

It’s not that removed from reality. Bush had 50.7% of the popular vote, but he had 53.1 % of the electoral college. Where the voters are located matters greatly.
