If you watch the Documentary it shows McCain climbing out of his A 4 while its starting to burn and he runs down the nose on to the boom to get away.

No, it was the plane next to his, but he was in extreme danger all the same..... fuel was spreading on the deck and that whole area of the deck was just about to be engulfed in flames and explosions. He had a very near miss with death that day, and there were 134 American heroes dead, 161 burned or injured.
