The risk John McCain took last Friday is comparable to the 72-year-old ex-fighter pilot knocking back two shots and flying his F-16 under the Golden Gate Bridge.
McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his co-pilot was the biggest gamble in presidential history. As of now, it is paying off, big-time.
The sensational selection in Dayton, Ohio, stepped all over the big story from Denver Barack Obama's powerful address to 85,000 cheering folks in Mile High Stadium, and 35 million nationally, a speech that vaulted him from a 2-point deficit early in the week to an 8-point margin. Barack had never before reached 49 percent against McCain.
As the Democrats were being rudely stepped on, however, Palin ignited an explosion of enthusiasm among conservatives, evangelicals, traditional Catholics, gun owners and Right to Lifers not seen in decades.

Wow. That's a heady and appealing thought. A very good article which captures the excitement breathed into this race- yet undercut, by the inane title and the even worse header advertisement at WND. Get it together, friends.
Surprised by Pat’s take on it. I guess he’ll be back in good graces here on FR for awhile. LOL
Look past the title; this is a good article.
I like this statement and have written similar thoughts.
“With his selection of Sarah Palin, John McCain has not only shaken up this election, he may have helped shape the future of the United States and much for the better.”
Cool!
But would he be able to get past the proposed suicide barriers?
McCain is a Navy vet. The US Navy never deployed the F-16. F-14’s and F/A-18’s, but not the F-16. The Navy had 26 F-16N’s for aggressor training until the airframes experienced metal fatigue. Later the Navy acquired 14 embargoed Pakistani F-16A’s and F-16B’s. Still, the F-16 should be regarded as an Air Force plane.
Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine. (For the record, McCain flew the A-4.)
McCain was a Navy pilot, the F-16 is an Air Force aircraft, it does not operate off carriers. The comparable Navy plane is the F/A-18. But of course McCain didn't fly that either. He also did not fly the F-4 Phantom nor the A-7 which the F/A-18 replaced (sort of the F-14 also replaced the F-4, and was replaced by the later F/A-18 models). He flew the A-4 Skyhawk, aka The Scooter, aka Heinemann's Hotrod, after it's designer
The A-4 was used as the "aggressor" aircraft for the Navy at one time, and folks might be familiar with them from "Top Gun", where the instructors are shown flying A-4s. The Blue Angels also flew the A-4, from '74 to '86, during the "low profile" military period after Vietnam. (The Air Force Thunderbirds similarly flew the T-38 during about the same period. Both teams had previously flow the F-4 Phantom.
Well written article by Pat. I am sorta surprised but definitely pleased with his apparent support and clear statement of the positives of this selection.
I think we have a fighting chance now, In November!
And the issues upon which the base loves to fight the culture war and right to life are back on the table
