Of course my dad’s old trick or rolling up an 18 inch piece of steel pipe in a newspaper (that way any photos just look like you’re hitting them with a newspaper) would work just as well.

he told me that he first used that trick in 1967 when a neighboring town’s (Ambridge PA)basketball team went to the regional finals. Their team that year was fantastic, and some people say it might have been the best HS basketball team in PA history. The regional finals were at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh. The arena sits on the edge of the “Hill District”-a bad area. There was talk that there was going to be trouble the night of the playoff games and my dad was looking for a little protection-he came up with that one-I said “Dad why don’t you just carry the pipe”-he said-son this way it looks like I’m just carrying around a newspaper.
