LETTER: TTC ordeal remains the same
The Lufkin Daily News ^ | August 30, 2008 | Gary L. Smith, Sr.

In my recent letter to you concerning the TTC, I misquoted some information about the company known as Cintra. Mr. Patrick Rhodes of Cintra wrote in response to my mistake. Therefore, I stand corrected with the following:

Fellow citizens, the company, Cintra, is not affiliated with ZAI-ACS. Cintra is partnered with Zachry on some TxDOT projects and ACS is partnered with Zachry on some other TxDOT projects. Therefore, I hope this clarifies the over-zealous statements in my letter. Cintra is a Spanish-owned company, and ACS is a larger Spanish-owned company. Zachry, a Texas company, is affiliated with each of them separately.

I am sure all of you feel as I do that this correction does not help us sleep better. We apparently have two Spanish-owned companies that wish to benefit from our state governments theft of our lands and livelihood. Mr. Rhodes also stated that the state of Texas will set the tolls.

Well Mr. Rhodes, we, the taxpayers, are still the ones who pay. I stand by the tolling examples I stated based on current information. Our land is still being threatened by an out-of-control government and the privateers who are to benefit from it. My desire is to maintain control of our infrastructure here in the good old U.S.A. I have visited both the Web sites of Cintra and ACS. They are both proud of their Texas investment potential.

I also know I upset some folks with my other statements. But I do hope that those of you who happen to be Republican can let your elected officials in your party know how I and many others feel. The truth of the TTC ordeal remains the same. In the past few days I have received e-mails suggesting I and my opinions are in among other things, in a small handful of idiots, a lazy person, a moron, a nitwit, stupid and a few others that I will not mention here due to their profane nature. All these, because I am a Democrat, or because of my political beliefs.

I remember when it was still American to believe in hope to have the American dream, to believe in a country where all can prosper, not just those who can buy influence in our political theater. A country that does not take advantage of those people who are not affluent and powerful. Yes, these are very idealistic views. I learned them from history, the history of the United States of America.

Nonetheless, for me it is still this simple question. Do we, in rural Texas have the right to equal representation in our government? Must we submit to the tyranny of those who would take our land and destroy our freedoms? Or will we respond with our ballots to let the elected officials know our resolve? In November we will find out the outcome for sure. I pray our homesteads will not be plowed under to the progress of the privateers. Regardless of your beliefs, please vote. I pray eventually we can all heal the differences that divide us. God bless you all.
