But what they did was not good, not for them, not for the baby, not for their parents, not for society.

So you are the arbiter of what is good for children, what is good for parents and what is good for society? Where do you garner the power to make such judgments? How many residents of this site do you suppose may have been the product of parents who may have been sexually active before marriage? How do you know that your parents weren't sexually active before they got married and just lucky that you weren't conceived beforehand? Or your older brother or sister for that matter.......

And for the record Houghton M., substantiated birth records from 1776 indicated that 30% of all births occured within 5 months of marriage...............Pre-mature births? Not likely........

No, I expressed a view shared by many people on this thread that sex before marriage is not good. I claim no special status as arbiter, any more than in your disagreeing with me you claim some high and mighty status of arbitering what I aid.

I simply expressed a conviction that it’s a mistake to put baby-making before marriage-making, something I thought would be a consensus view on FR.

I also made clear that one can call something a mistake, acknowledge it was not good for the individuals or for society without condemning the persons involved.

Look, you are contradicting the Palins. They acknowledge that their daughter now faces heavy challenges she would not have faced had she not done what she did. They offer their full love and support. They welcome the child, who is innocent of any mistake. But they do not deny that a mistake was made.

What’s so hard about that? Why must you judge me so harshly for pointing out that we can affirm the people, who themselves recognize their error, without denying that an error was made?

And stop it already with the statistics. I know these stats very well. Yes, of course, many people have throughout history “jumped the gun.” You throw statistics as if the fact that people do something means it’s good.

I can cite any set of statistics about what people do but that doesn’t make the act good. The issue is whether even engaged couples are better off to wait until they actually have made an irrevocable promise to each other publicly and in law (and sacrament for many of us) before making babies. A lot of evidence shows they are better off.
