Likely GOP presidential nominee John McCain and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, are traveling to Mississippi on Sunday to check on people getting prepared for Hurricane Gustav.
Their trip comes just as delegates are preparing for the Republican National Convention, which begins Monday.
Aides say McCain and his wife Cindy will join Palin in traveling to Jackson, Miss., Sunday at the invitation of Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour because of concerns about people threatened by the storm, which was heading into the Gulf of Mexico and menacing the same area ravaged by Hurricane Katrina three years ago. The storm could hit the United States as early as Monday afternoon.
The McCains and Palin will receive a briefing at the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency a permanent operations center monitoring hurricane response.

oy...my opportunism thesis just became bi-partisan.
Actually, McCain probably didn’t have a choice. Not to show fake concern would be used by his political opponents up the whazoo
Compassionate conservatism, donchano?
“Not to show fake concern would be used by his political opponents up the whazoo”
Maybe it’s not fake.
I understand what you mean... but I was talking about the Democrats’ hypocrisy... they’ll say, “We were there! McCain wasn’t and therefore doesn’t care about you”... get the drift?
The nation is threatened by something that laid waste once before and right in the middle of the convention. There is hyper sensitivity to all of it now.
What should he do?
Can you define the line between genuine concern and opportunism when a camapigns motto is “Country First”?
Or is this a test to the nation what that really means?
The primary business of the convention can go on, and that serves the nation too.
True enough, but if Sarah went out to the neighborhoods and demonstrated proper gun handling and property defense, they’d take the nation by storm and, in part, restore faith in our leadership . . .
Oh my, now Alan Colmes is going to be really really really upset. A mom going into a storm zone! Oh NO!!!
I want to know how the MSM is going to balance all that free airtime that the DNC got last week and which the RNC won’t get this week. Will the MSM give free airtime to the Republicans to balance out all that missed airtime? Yeah, I’m sure they will!
Not to mention the service she'd be doing to the good folks in the neighborhood.
No, I'm kidding about that. They FReeper with the duck graphic made the point that Obama came off looking like he was one-upping McCain's proposal, and I do agree with that.
I also think it's a bit presumptuous for him to pledge his supporters' money like that, but I suppose that's just the politician in him.
“get the drift?”
As clear as an azure sky.
