A meme is developing out there among liberals that Gov. Sarah Palin was a supporter of Pat Buchanan in the 1990s, a charge that the McCain-Palin campaign strongly denies.
The evidence is the following, as first noticed by "The Nation": in an Associated Press story from July 17, 1999, titled, "Buchanan takes conservative message to Fairbanks."
"Pat Buchanan brought his conservative message of a smaller government and an America First foreign policy to Fairbanks and Wasilla on Friday as he continued a campaign swing through Alaska .In Wasilla, Buchanan took some shots at the "Republican establishment," saying it was willing to cast aside conservative ideals in a zeal to ensure the nomination for Bush. 'I'm hoping the people of Alaska will disagree that we need a candidate anointed by Washington, D.C.,' he said to a group of three dozen supporters. Among those sporting Buchanan buttons were Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin and state Sen. Jerry Ward, R-Anchorage."
Palin wrote to the AP that her presence at the rally and her wearing a Buchanan button were merely ways to welcome Buchanan to Wasilla, not endorsements of his candidacy.
But that's not quite how Buchanan remembers it.
Buchanan told Chris Matthews yesterday that Palin "was a brigader in 1996 as was her husband, Chris, they were at a fundraiser for me, she's a terrific gal, she's a rebel reformer."

So what if she was?
/raises eyebrow
A rebel reformer, from Buchanan's group, from outside the Beltway? Perhaps the blind squirrel McCain actually found a nut this time.
Exactly. Moreover, Pat had not lost his sanity by the 1990’s.
it means that mccain gets all the ron paul supporters as well
Okay, someone here is bound to misconstrue that comment, so to be more specific: by "nut" I mean "something real" and not "someone crazy."
Please, dear God, don’t let Sarah and the McCain camp misplay this. Sarah Palin and her husband had a right to support whomever they wanted in 1996 — and if they liked Pat they should say so, loud and proud. Pat may at times be a bit of an oddball, but he’s not a raving racist like Barack Obama. Note to Sarah: Say, yeah, I like Pat. So what? Next question.
Actually I think it would help McCain if it were true.
But I did hear a rumor that Joe Biden was part of John Edwards’s brigade in ‘04.
Get a grip, newbie.
I just went to church today, so God forgive me, I hate the liberal left
Really poor choice of words!
Based upon your posting history, I don’t believe you.
Not such a big deal if she supported Buchanan or not. Buchanan is solid on social issues such as life, borders, affirmative action...However, he is a disaster on foreign policy and sometimes sounds like Kucinich. Unfortunately these days he spends 75%+ of the time discussing foreign policy (to the delight of his bosses as MSDNC). This was not always the case.
Big F’n deal. Chris Matthews was a GW Bush supporter in 2000...or so he says.
I understood it. blind squirrel / found nut...I wonder how she feels about Buchanan now. I’ll have to keep reading. Still won’t vote for McCain, but would like to know what we are in for if she becomes pres.
(like your tagline...my son’s fiance ALWAYS orders desert first ;)
Ummm, I’ve been posting on FR for more than 10 years, first as Elwoodp, now as HampdenKid. Plus, I have about 30 years of political consulting experience in Washington. So, actually, I have a pretty good grip. And this is one trap the McCain camp with its animosity towards Pat should not plunge Sarah Palin into.
Pat Buchanan has become the new David Duke to the Left. This is the most serious charge I’ve seen on Palin. I would believe her before I believe Buchanan though.
If they're smart, they'll ignore it.
Ten or twelve years ago, I bought a book authored by Pat Buchanan, and actually read it.
Moreover, I even agreed with some of what he had written it.
Please forgive this abject sinner, who is sincerely repentant for this grave sin of commission.
Also forgive me for all my other sins of peripheral association with other now unsavory characters, who were less seemingly sensible and upstanding then, but have since diverged from both my then and current views and beliefs, even as my views and beliefs have changed and (hopefully) matured over the years....
