AUGUSTA, Maine — On Monday, Maine joins other U.S. states and Canadian provinces that have made it illegal to smoke in a car while children are present.

But for the first year the law's in effect, violators will only get warnings.

A law passed by the state legislature earlier this year outlaws smoking in cars while youths under 16 are present.

It's modelled after a tougher ordinance in the city of Bangor, Maine.

California, Arkansas and Louisiana have passed similar laws, as have Puerto Rico and some Canadian provinces.

Other states have also looked at the proposal.

When he signed Maine's bill into law in April, Gov. John Baldacci hailed the legislation as a strike against secondhand smoke, saying that tobacco use costs too many lives and too much money.

"But for the first year the law's in effect, violators will only get warnings."

Starting next year, they will be dragged from their cars and shot on sight.

Oh fantastic! I so detest living in New England. I have a wedding to go to in Maine on Friday and I smoke and I have a 16 year old. I will still smoke and let them pull me over to give me a warning. Give me a break.

Starting next year, they will be dragged from their cars and shot on sight. Impossible, liberals don't believe in guns. Violators will instead be sent to re-education camps. Their first camp class will be Victimhood 101.

There’s no way to rule innocent men.
The only power any government has is the power to crack
down on criminals.
Well, when there aren’t enough criminals one makes them.
One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes
impossible for men to live without breaking laws.
Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens?
What’s there in that for anyone?
But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be
observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted –
and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then
you cash in on guilt.

No need for such a law however, responsible parenting will keep kids away from McDonald's at least 354 days a year.

Is it legal to idle your car (or even drive it) in an area where children are present. That tailpipe is putting out way more than that cigarette.

We might as well be consistent since it is all for the children. No parents should be allowed to drive a car to pick up their kids at school.

How people get so upset by a burning leaf yet see nothing wrong with a two inch tailpipe spewing heavy metals and burned (and unburned) hydro carbons.

Way ahead of you, friend...certain New Hampshire ski areas have forbidden idling your cars when you are on their property. Global warming, and all that...

I have posted this quote several times on FR because it so perfectly encapsulates the mindset - and objective - of Liberal Fascism.
I never tire of seeing it, because truth is so seldom heard these days or respected when it is given voice.

Next will be laws forbidding children to ride in cars, because cars are dangerous.
