It ain't so Joe
Delaware Grapevine ^ | December 20, 2007 | Celia Cohen

If ever there was a crash that tugged at the heart of the entire state, it was the one that took the lives of Joe Biden’s wife and baby daughter and hospitalized his two toddler sons 35 years ago, just weeks after his precocious election to the U.S. Senate.

It was an unbearable turn of events, from one of the most daring political breakthroughs in Delaware political history to unspeakable grief, and there is no reason to make the accident appear worse than it was.

While campaigning in Iowa for the Democratic presidential nomination, however, Biden did.

“Let me tell you a little story,” he was quoted as saying last Friday in the New York Times.

“I got elected when I was 29, and I got elected November the 7th. And on December 18 of that year, my wife and three kids were Christmas shopping for a Christmas tree. A tractor-trailer, a guy who allegedly – and I never pursued it – drank his lunch instead of eating his lunch, broadsided my family and killed my wife instantly, and killed my daughter instantly, and hospitalized my two sons, with what were thought to be at the time permanent, fundamental injuries.”

Except there was no drinking. There was not even speeding. The truck’s brakes checked out, as well. It was not the driver’s fault.

My heart goes out to Biden and his family but why would Biden, even 35 YEARS LATER, subject this honest, decent truck driver to such slander? Even given the unspeakable tragedy the Biden family suffered shouldn't he have to apologize for his slander of this good hard working man?

Oh my- PLUGS had to embellish on the deaths of his wife and child? Not enough pathos to get all the sympathy HE needs?
He is a plagiarist and a liar- bad character traits

From the article:

Curtis C. Dunn, the driver, died in 1999, but Philip A. Lafferty, the truck owner he drove for, still lives in Avondale, Pa. In a telephone interview, Lafferty recalled the state police impounding the tractor-trailer and the station wagon for the investigation for a couple of days and concluding that Dunn was not at fault.

Makes you wonder about the “son of a truck driver” comment made about a week ago. Hmmmm.

The honest decent truck driver is dead now. PLUGS is despicable. The accident was investigated and seems to have been caused by a moment of inattention by Mrs Biden, but understandably no one wanted to or now wants to assign “blame” to the victim in this tragedy.

Puh Leeze. PLUGS was and is a lawyer- yet he did “nothing” and says he is relying on hearsay?

He would have sued in a heartbeat if he had any evidence of drunk driving or accident caused by the truck driver.

Even after 35 years, he is still using his dead wife and baby..... as traction for sympathy votes.

Is this the kind of personal character and integrity we need to “change” Washington?

“why would biden subject this honest, decent truck drive to such slander...”

because he is a high priest of the liberal party.

IMHO

When it gets right down to it, character is what makes the man. Need I say more? Except for this: you can either have Joe Biden and his boss. Or you have Sarah Palin and her boss. Take your pick.

This is a classic Nixon tactic. Biden feels he can get away with this lie because he knows that the Republicans don't dare to challenge it. For if they do, they will be perceived as politicizing Biden's personal tragedy and the fact that Biden lied will be greatly overshadowed by the blowback that will come the Republican's way.

Our only hope is that somebody from the truck driver's family speaks up about this outrage. Otherwise, it is best left alone.

The lie is still being repeated:

“He endured an unspeakable personal tragedy, shortly after his first run for the Senate in 1972, when his wife and daughter were killed by a drunk driver.”

It seems that Dims/Libs will say anything, use anybody, to further their own agenda. What a totally despicable thing to say! I think this man or his family should sue Biden for everything he owns. This innocent truck driver and his family have had to live with this tragic memory for the past 35 years as well.

“I got a phone call saying, ‘Your wife’s dead, your daughter’s dead.’ And I’ve only said that three times in public before. But I say it here because it’s so important for you to understand. I got one of those phone calls. It was an errant driver who stopped to drink instead of drive and hit a tractor-trailer, hit my children and my wife and killed them.”

This is not an unnecessary embellishment, this is an out-and-out lie:

In that interview, Herlihy said Neilia Biden either accelerated or drifted through the intersection, and Dunn could not stop. The truck driver said she was not looking at him, her face turned away, and the state police thought she was distracted by one of the children in the back seat.

Thank you for posting this, so that I will have the ammo to use against anyone who tries to play the sympathy ploy. It is tragic enough that the mother and daughter were killed, the little boys so injured. But to USE this tragedy in such a way, to imply the other driver is a known drunk, stopped off for a few then took out his family when it was determined that Mrs. Biden caused the accident to occur is worse them shameless; it is totally disgraceful.

Just like a Democrat to use a family tragedy to their benefit! They have no morals about this sort of sympathy. Remember how John Edwards used his son’s death the same way?

Biden seems like one of those guys who just can't help himself and be content with allowing the past to be the past without embellishment.

Perhaps some clever lawyer can convince the truck driver's relatives to sue Joe Biden for slander.
