I agree. Plus, it allows McCain to “evolve” his position on ANWR without looking like he’s caving to the “Big Oil Companies” or “Special Interests”.

I think the 3.3% growth coming out just before Obama’s “we are all heading to poverty speech” confused a lot of people. Talk with a lib and mention that and they stutter. Most people who are losing their homes bought ones they knew they couldn’t afford. And when you don’t think before buying and can’t manage money at all, you just might not think to get out to vote either.

I think the key thing is that the economy has always been better than the MSM has been pushing on us. Constantly, they compare the economy at the apex of the tech boom before the collapse to current data. For most of the Bush years, the economy has been doing pretty well. Not as great as the Clinton years but that was before the tech bubble collapsed which was also on Clinton’s watch.

We saw the same bs from the press during 2004 when they tried to slam bush hard on the economy when it was still recovering quite well from 9/11.

If Hilary were the nominee, the economy would be a bigger plus for Dems because of her husband’s credibility (rightly or wrongly) on the economy. Florida would be in play. Ohio would be a lock for HRC and McCain would be scrambling hard just to look like a credible alternative instead of in a tie.

I say its 3 things: 1)Obama has no credibility on any issue and just gets the generic democratic bump. 2) Voters can blame democrats for high gas prices, not Bush given their intransience. 3) The economy is doing better than it would in a recession, job losses are under 100k a month, 5.7% unemployment is much better than what we’ve seen in previous recessions, and we just had 3% economic growth for the summer months.

If the economy keeps recovering well enough and foreign policy issues get pushed to the forefront before November 3rd, we’re looking golden.

Well if peopel paid attention to what is real and not what they are told to think they would know that immediately when the Bush tax cuts expire that a family of 4 making $30,000 overnight will owe the government an extra $3000 a year. I don’t know how that will work with high energery prices, and food costs but I don’t think they will like it too much. Obama has promised too much to think that the middle class will get a tax cut. Only fools could believe that!

I love how the media says bush approval at 29% but no mention of congress at 9% we need to start saying Bush is 3 times more popular than congress...

The GOP should own the energy issue. If they have any brains at all, they will run ads with Pelosi's ignorant and insulting statements about oil the scam with T bone Pickens on wind power , the and tie her to Obama.

....better....

Despite what the administration says about economic growth, the average family in my neck of the woods is not feeling the supposed “good times.” People have used credit to combat inflation and families are coming to the end of that rope where today and yesterday’s bills are coming due.

The Republican talking heads that are blinded to the issue must be above the Madding Crowd. The economy is a big issue and the more “have nots” we have, the greater the populist appeal of wealth redistribution - eg leftist Democratic party.

I hope that Palin still has a connection with the reality of middle class working families and can call Republicans on silly schemes like “tax cuts” to solve the Health Care Insurance issue.

Most the working class love freedom and small government. It is just getting so they can’t afford to hold their own beliefs anymore.

I think many Americans have finally figured out the connection between high gas prices and not drilling for oil. It wouldn’t hurt the McCain campaign to mention Bush’s words on ending the offshore drilling ban. The price of a barrel of oil started dropping almost immediately.

I know some young couples who are currently buying homes. I know some others who lost their homes, because they bought homes 5 times their yearly salary on ARMs and claimed they didn’t understand the contract and were ‘taken advantage of’. When asked why they didn’t go to a lawyer to review the contract prior to signing, they said they couldn’t afford it.

If you can’t afford to pay a couple of hundred bucks to a lawyer before signing such an important document, it’s time to wait to purchase a house.

The other thing to consider is the fall in housing prices. It’s my opinion that the housing values went up sharply when real estate became commonplace to use as a quick investment. When you utilize a tool like that, the prices will be false. And when something goes up quickly like that, it goes down. So I’m not even sure the housing values are going down; rather, they might be moving to where they should have been in the first place.

they’d better hope so, because the economy (other than Michigan’s) is boomin’ and has been for a while. I wasn’t able to turn up the FR topic, but the US’ trade deficit dropped 22 per cent in one year, during which the price of crude spiked into the $140s.

[snip] If you talk to Warren [Buffet], he’ll tell you his preference is not to meddle in the economy at all — let the market work, however way it’s going to work, and then just tax the heck out of people at the end and just redistribute it,” Obama said. “That way you’re not impeding efficiency, and you’re achieving equity on the back end.” He continued by saying that he thought there was some merit in Buffett’s argument. Of course, anyone who believes that the purpose of taxation is to "soak the rich" has a place in the Democratic party. The lower middle/"working classes" don't pay much in terms of income taxes, so they fall for such sh-t.

The also only hate "big government" when its benefiting "minorities" or "the rich."

There is that stupid argument that the rich pay all the taxes. That is because they make all the money. There is a huge and growing disparity between the wealthy and the working class. To the lower working class, a small percentage of a $30,000 -40,000 salary in taxation can be an enormous hit when viewed in how much that effects available disposable income left for essential things like rent, food, gas and health care. A person making $200,000 could have half that taken in taxes and still have 3 times the disposable income of a working class person of lower income.

That is the argument the Democrats will make. If the wealthy and upper middle class don’t understand that, they risk being parted from their wealth when the have nots vastly outnumber the haves. To make the argument that they pay all the taxes sounds like a comment from Marie Antionette.

More class warfare stuff from the populists. Try owning your own business and seeing how "fat cats" get soaked. The only area where the lower middle class/upper lower class get hit is (occassionally) on property taxes, which is why so many wind up moving to the boonies.

I am for keeping the income tax if it is flat and reasonable. Anything else is merely class warfare and irrational. Those who invest in society and take risks should not be penalized.

Most wealthy people here in the states got there the old fashioned way, THEY EARNED IT. Save your "Marie Antionette/Paris Hilton" BS for some Okie tavern or the Democratic Party.

It is the lower middle classes that will bring us nationalized health care. Because it is the "fair" (LIFE AINT FAIR!) and "Christian" thing to do.
