When Sarah Palin stepped into the spotlight as John McCains running mate in Dayton, Ohio, and promised that women could shatter that glass ceiling once and for all, it was an electrifying moment in a presidential election that had already produced its share of upsets and surprises.
History was on the march again the morning after Barack Obama became the first African-American to accept his partys White House nomination. After the fireworks, the 80,000-strong crowd who had cheered Obama to the skies at the Mile High stadium in Denver woke up with a hangover.
We may be seeing the first woman president. As a Democrat, I am reeling, said Camille Paglia, the cultural critic. That was the best political speech I have ever seen delivered by an American woman politician. Palin is as tough as nails.
With her beehive hairdo and retro specs, Palin, 44, has a naughty librarian vibe, according to Craig Ferguson, the Scottish comedian who stars on late-night US television. However, the selection of Palin, the governor of Alaska and a mother of five, as the first female Republican vice-presidential nominee is no joke for the Democrats.

Yup! A veritable Margaret Thatcher all beautifully wrapped up and special delivered to us by our Glorious Creator! Thanks be to God!
Wow even Camille Paglia was blown away.
This is going to be an amazing ride!

Oh my!!! Camille forgot her talking points!!! Or maybe she just didn’t get them yet....
‘Palin is as tough as nails’ or confident because “Right is Might!
Sarah's better looking.
.... okay, Tina's still incredibly HOT!
Isn’t Camille a close friend of Rush?
Did you notice Andrew Sullivan’s quote on the right side of the page? He’s dissing Palin because she’s a former beauty queen. Andrew should know about “queens”!
I knew it. Look for Fey and SNL to attempt to relentlessly skewer Palin and McCain ASAP.
Camille is the smartest woman on the left. She has never been a big Hillary fan. Her comments should scare the crap out of the NOW gang.
I don’t follow Paglia closely but I have read a number of her books and articles through the years — I don’t think Camille Paglia follows any liberal talking points too obediently. She is actually more radical than most in the Democrat Party, but she does not hesitate to rip into them, especially all the Stalinist feminists she despises.
She will VOTE pretty reliably for the left, sad to say, but her observations and reasoning can often be refreshing. Even when I disagree with her (just about all the time) she is interesting, which is a lot more than one can say for the Fembot left.
So I’m not at all surprised to see Camille praise Sarah Palin’s speech so highly, because Camille reveres truly strong women with courage and convictions, and loathes the simpering whining airheads that the Democrat Party tends to churn out.
Say what you will about Camille, she has NO talking points that are not her own, minted by her and her alone.
I hadn’t thought about it, but it’s no surprise to me that she likes, or at least understands the potential significance of Sarah Palin.
Is she? I thought Camille Paglia was a hard-core lib, perhaps I’m confusing her with someone else.
one thing no one has mentioned, she is a WINNER.
She was a successful 10 year mayor, beat two incumbents for the governor race and had strasospheric approval ratings.
She is going to play very well in middle America. The libs will hate her more than ronald reagan.
OK, now I know I am.
About my earlier comment: Nevermind.

I think she likes strong people period, male or female.
Super-competent? Glamorous? I have yet to see evidence of either one of those traits in MO. I don't consider the ability to read a teleprompter proof of competence, although she does seem to be better at it than her husband.
IIRC, they were both invited to some big media function. The organizers arranged the seating so they sat next to each other, hoping for fireworks and epic drama. But it turns out they hit it off big and had a lot of fun together. I seem to recall they even shared a cigar. She sent in a message for his anniversary week.
