St. Anthonys Medical Center in south St. Louis was closed to new patients around 3:30 p.m. after three walked in and said they had been exposed to an unknown substance, Mehlville Fire Protection District Chief Jim Silvernail said.
Initial reports said the patients skin began turning blue. Silvernail said he was unable to confirm those reports.
Silvernail said the hospitals ventilation system had been isolated, and people inside the hospital were not allowed to use the escalator.
A hazardous materials team set up decontamination tents in the hospitals parking lot shortly after the incident was reported to authorities.
The emergency room at SSM DePaul Health Center in Bridgeton, Mo., was also placed on lock down after three people walked in and said they had been exposed to an unknown white powder, Silvernail said. An official said two of the patients were in critical condition.
The Pattonville Fire Protection Districts hazardous materials team planned to perform decontamination procedures on several dozen people who were inside the hospital.
Officials said another person taken to Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City, Ill., would be transferred to St. Louis University Hospital. Neither hospital was expected to be placed on lock down.
Silvernail said the incidents began in East St. Louis and appeared to be related.

What are the signs and symptoms of ricin exposure?
Inhalation: Within a few hours of inhaling significant amounts of ricin, the likely symp-toms would be coughing, tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, nausea, and aching muscles. Within the next few hours, the bodys airways (lungs) would become severely in-flamed (swollen and hot), excess fluid would build up in the lungs, breathing would become even more difficult, and the skin might turn blue.
This probably makes me an insensitive jerk, but at first I thought it said, “People in St. Louis hospitals are sick.” Yeah, that’s why they’re there.
And I'm in St. Louis.
