The first program will include a discussion of the historical context of civil liberties led by Joel Rosenthal, president of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs. He will discuss major events in U.S. history such as the Civil War, the post-World War I Palmer Raids and McCarthyism.

Jeff McCausland, former dean of academics at the U.S. Army War College, will focus on the current debate on issues ranging from detainee policies to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and the military tribunals in Guantanamo Bay. McCausland is a frequent television commentator on the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The session will conclude with a panel discussion on what the current situation means for Americans. Panelists will include Barbara McDade, executive director of the Bangor Public Library, and U.S. Attorney Paula Silsby.

The second session, “The View Through the Lens of Literature,” will explore fear, civil liberties and the rule of law through a scholar-led discussion of Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible.” Margery Irvine, a lecturer in English at the University of Maine, will be the leader.

Registration is advised for the first session and required for the second to receive a copy of the play.

The project is being funded in part by the We the People initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Similar sessions will be held in Portland.

Okay so someone tell me when they will be doing a series on economic liberties? We have the worst economy and tax burden in the country and they're all whining about McCarthy trying to stop communism? Its because of these commies that were in the trouble were in now. If McCarthy succeeded we wouldn't be in the mess were in now. Maine is nothing more than a communist dictatorship.

It does look pretty predictable, doesn’t it? I’m sure it’ll get a glowing report in the Bangor Daily News, too.

I spent a year at Loring AFB in Maine...many moons ago. It doesn't exist anymore...one of the "clinton closures".

Are those people just pissed because we got all the sunshine here in Georgia? Or, maybe they're elated that Global Warming will be good for them...they can actually have a summer longer than 2 weeks.
