John McCain announced his V.P. running mate today and it turns out to be an excellent choice. Sarah Palin is the current Governor of Alaska and, although most people haven’t heard of her, she brings a lot to the ticket. The more I read and hear about her, the more I’m reminded of Theodore Roosevelt.
Although she’s relatively young she has quite a few layers of experience. She’s a former champion basketball player, beauty pageant contestant, PTA member, city councilwoman and Mayor. Her husband is a commercial fisherman and union member who cares for their five children. She’s a life member of the NRA and a pro-life, conservative, hunting, fishing, conservationist. Governor Palin has fought corruption within the Republican Party and has one of the highest approval ratings of any Governor.
Teddy Roosevelt also had a wide variety of experiences before winning national office. He had a reputation for doing what was right for the people, not for himself. As President he started the National Park system to conserve land for future generations. Unlike environmentalists, who believe the environment should be protected at all costs, conservationists believe it should be protected in balance with the needs of people. Both President Roosevelt and Governor Palin represent an understanding of that balance, coupled with an appreciation for all of our natural resources.
The most impressive connection I find between the two is a great strength of character.

Some of the comparisons to TR are apt. But it should be remembered that NY State Republicans basically put TR on McKinley’s ticket to get rid of him. Palin seems to be something of an icon in Alaska.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed this. If I’m not mistaken, TR was also a journalist, which is how he entered the muckraking biz. I think Sara Palin looks like the reincarnation of TR in a real “Boys from Brazil” kind of way.

Just in case this comes up again in 2012, it should be understood that Sarah Palin is nothing like Theodore Roosevelt. His childhood in New York City, combined with a year-long Grand Tour of Europe at age 10, a trip down the Nile at age 14, and several months spent in Germany following the trip to Egypt, gave him a very broad view of the world.
He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard and attended Columbia Law School. Within two years of his Harvard graduation he became the youngest man ever elected to the New York State Assembly (New York State had a population of over 5 million at that time compared with Alaska’s current population of well under 1 million) and published his first book, The Naval War of 1812. That would be the first of more than 35 books that he wrote during his lifetime.
Before being chosen as the vice-presidential nominee he had also been a very active President of the Board of Police Commissioners in New York City (Google “midnight rambles”), held two Federal level positions as U.S. Civil Service Commissioner and Assistant Secretary of the Navy, fought in a war and been Governor of New York State. His political career between his first term as an Assemblyman and his election as the Vice-President, spanned twenty years.
Theodore Roosevelt had a fine mind, enjoyed poetry as much as hunting, was a voracious reader and was open to new ideas (even those that imposed a financial burden on business owners). He also got along well with people from all walks of life, including elitist city folk like himself.
Sarah Palin has a lot of catching up to do.
Teddy Roosevelt had much more experience, as you say. He was also very liberal, and he was John McCain’s role model in many ways.
