John McCain stole the Democrats' thunder by announcing Friday morning that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will be his vice presidential running mate.
The second woman picked for the veep slot, Palin, 44, is a first-term governor and former small town mayor. A conservative, she is anti-abortion, removing a worry among Republicans who feared McCain would alienate religious right voters with his running mate. Palin is a mother of five, include a 4-month-old son with Down syndrome.
She has also been praised by free market groups such as the Club for Growth, which has called her a "genuine reformer." She's a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, too.
"The selection of Governor Palin is great news for conservatives, for the party and for the country," said David Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union, in a statement.
The pick ensures that domestic oil drilling will be a major issue in the race. Republicans have hammered Democrats throughout the summer on the issue, saying that expanding domestic production is an obvious answer to soaring prices.
Obama's campaign slammed her as inexperienced. "Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency," it said in a statement.
The McCain responded by calling it "audacious" to claim that Palin lacks the credentials to be veep.
"She has a record of accomplishment that Senator Obama simply cannot match," McCain spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker said in a statement.

“Something about her taxing and spending and not caring that 13 year old Alaskan girls can get abortions without parental consent.”
It shook me up - I need more info.
They are complete lies, I saw an article that she did cut spending, even gave up her government paid jet, and is strongly for parental consent. There are so many articles, I don’t remember which one.
I just did a search, here are some related articles.

“Mrs Palin may have been Alaska’s Governor for a mere two years, but she is wildly popular, with an approval rating of 80 per cent. She ran in her gubernatorial campaign as a cleangovernment reformer and scourge of wasteful spending, a message that resonated strongly in a state beset by political corruption.
Since she took office in 2006 as Alaska’s youngest governor, and the first woman to hold the post, she has delivered on many of her campaign promises. She took a pay cut, dispensed with the gubernatorial jet, and killed the infamous “Bridge to Nowhere” project that had become a nationwide symbol of the wasteful spending that Mr McCain has made a cornerstone of his campaign. “As Governor I’ve stood up to politics as usual,” Mrs Palin said. “I’ve stopped wasteful spending, cut taxes, and put the people first.”

Sarah Palin Develops Strong Pro-Life Record on Abortion as Alaska Governor
http://www.lifenews.com/state3460.html
As the governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin hasn’t had many opportunities to address the issue of abortion, but she has promoted a pro-life position when given the opportunity. Palin has appeared to have an attitude focusing on getting pro-life measures approved but making sure they’re done right.
The Alaska legislature approved a parental consent bill to help parents know when their minor children are considering an abortion and to give them the ability to veto the abortion.
The Alaska Supreme Court eventually declared unconstitutional on a 3-2 vote.
Palin called the high court’s ruling “outrageous” and asked Attorney General Talis Colberg to file legal papers asking for a re-hearing.
“She feels parental consent is reasonable because it is required in nearly every aspect of a child’s life. It’s a parent’s right and responsibility to be involved in their child’s life,” spokeswoman Sharon Leighow said at the time.
Since the decision, Governor Palin appointed Daniel Winfree of Fairbanks to replace one of the judges who sided with the majority in overturning the consent statute.
That earned her praise from Alaska Right to Life, the state’s leading pro-life group.
Fianlly, an intelligent woman that has the guts to take care
of corrupt Alaskan issues. There were a lot. I lived there for 8 years I know. We need someone like her 2nd in command in our country. What a wise choice from McCain. He will be a great leader of our country and with Palin as VP. we cannot go wrong. She does not back down from what she believes and does not say what everyone wants to hear. She tells it like it is and doesn’t care if it offends anyone. What a woman. Proud to be living in the state she was raised in. Proud to be an American. She definitely knows the problems of our country and will take care of them. No need to worry with her in office. Have faith and you will see.
Yes. I think Obama had thought, and many of us early on may have agreed with him, that he and McCain were merely playing checkers and that Obama was easily and clearly running the board (with the help of MSM and Hollywood of course), but McCain all along has actually been playing another game and I think the Democrats just woke up to that fact—it has been checkers all along—CHECK . . .
Not quite right. After her two terms as mayor of Wasilla she ran for Lt Gov in 2002, but lost. She beat the winner of the 2002 gubernatorial race, Frank Murkowski, during the 2006 primary election and beat former governor Tony Knowles in the general election.
Thanks.
Even Jeff Katz (whom I respect as a solid conservative talradio guy) sounded a little doubtful when the man was putting her down. His spin did read like DNC “talking points” but he is supposed to be the biggest talkradio person in Alaska—wish I could remember his name.
Perhaps Anchorage is like Aspen—a mendacious liberal-run redoubt in conservative country.
Sorry guys I am tired tonight (posting long after my bedtime these days—lol.) I meant to say the game McCain has been playing all along has been Chess—CHECK (dare I say MATE? :-).
And just yesterday the Democratic party put a corrupt former "community organizer" with zero foreign policy experience and zero executive experience and zero business experience....."
Sounds like the O camp thinks McCain just won the election.
I think 10 Community Organizers equal One Mayor. In Chicago, it’s 100 to One.
I also think a One Term Governor with an 85% approval rating beats 100 Senators and 435 House Members with a 9% approval rating.
LIke I said, Palin does the right thing, over and over and over. Alot of our repubs up here don't like it.
Here's an example. Around 15-20 years back, the repub legislature bankrupted the state employees retirement system. They claimed the stock markets incredible rise would never stop, so they didn't have to contribute as much. Well, now, the fund is like 7 billion in the hole and every year, the school districts have to pay half their budget for retirements. Going broke. Now the repubs who wanted to spend the money in other ways than what it was supposed to be for; don't like to remember why the fund is broke. If truth ever comes to light, the repubs will be blamed and go down in flames. The repubs did have an accounting firm give the results they wanted to find to cover it up. Well, when oil went thru the roof, state flush with money, the legislators wanted to spend it all in their own pockets. Palin said, hold on here Chester, we better get the retirement fund solvent again; because she knew it would damage the repub party in the end when it hit the fan. Once again Palin does the right thing rather than what our repub & dem legilators wanted to do.
She has integrity but her decisions don't always sit well with the repubs up here who have had their way at the money for so long. What a breath of fresh air; she's for real.
On the big issues, she very conservative; on the smaller issues, she often throws her weight behind the people, not the oil companys; why she has such a high approval rating. Her husband, once was a member of AIP and I always heard that she was once registered dem when she was young; that gives her the balanced logic a sucessful politician needs to survive. One thing for sure, she's tough as nails and you all will see that in the debates.
Since I love women, especially beautiful, intelligent Conservative women, I guess they’ll be calling me a Racist.
Obama, the baby killer. WILL THAT DO?
Something I can understand.
Our Gov.Sanford vetoes the GOP pork as much as the Dem’s and all hate him for it.Yet if he was allowed by law,he would win again.
Acting like Dems has and always will doom the GOP as 2006 proved.
With conservatives it’s always:”What price principle?”
With politicians both Dem and Repubs it’s simply:”What price?”
“I got a question, is it just me or do others feel that being Mayor trumps being a community organizer?”
Absolutely. Nobody can tell you any major legislation accomplishment by Obama. He also has an unbelievable record of “present” votes that are not indicative of leadership. I expect the McCain camp to use this in ads at some point.
I think Palin will surprise those who have not done their research. She sounds like a tough and determined leader.
Sarah Palin has not been in office long but her list of accomplishments are very impressive. We need to make a Freep list since I doubt the media will do it and compare it to Biden and Obama.
Better to be loved by Marilyn Monroe than Malcolm X—is that it?
Can’t argue against the logic—or the libido.
Even some of the “Brothers” may agree.
Where is it more difficult to hold public office? In a small town where you shop, attend sporting events and work around the people you are accountable to, or from a distance like being a senator that no one really ever sees?
New Energy from a state with energy
Sometimes people with lots of experience stink at what they do too
