Todd Palin unique among nation's 5 first husbands
Anchorage Daily News ^ | May 27, 2007 | JEANNETTE J. LEE

THE MAN: He's worked the oil patch, won the Iron Dog and takes care of the kids

That same week, his wife, Gov. Sarah Palin, was in Juneau requesting more money for the state budget and assuring legislators they'd soon see her plan for a natural gas pipeline that could one day be the most expensive construction project in North America. Then she flew to Fairbanks to wave her exhausted husband across the finish line.

It's not just his title as the state's reigning snowmobile co-champion that sets 42-year-old Todd Palin apart from the nation's other first spouses. And it's not that he's one of just five who are men.

White-collar jobs in law, education or health care are typical among the current crop of first spouses, but Palin spent nearly 20 years as a blue-collar employee in the oil fields of the North Slope. And every summer he heads west to his birthplace in Dillingham to work the Bristol Bay commercial salmon fishery from his property on the Nushagak River.

A lifetime of manual labor in the state's two largest and most physically demanding industries is helping Palin carve out his role as Alaska's first spouse, or "first dude," a nickname he has in common with the Kansas governor's husband, Gary Sebelius.

Like other first spouses around the country, Palin has been asked to champion an array of causes or institutions since his wife took office in December.

His favorite is steering young Alaskans toward stable jobs in the oil and gas industry. It's a singular choice among his counterparts, whose pet issues include schools, public health, domestic violence, poverty or the arts.

One more mindless name calling attack from you and I’ll report you for abuse. Not as a victim. But as one who will not take your crap. That newbie stuff doesn’t fly from someone here for as short a time as you.

Got a problem, webrover? I asked a simple question. I always like to know if people are Christians, especially those in government. It gives them an edge, IMHO. No particular brand, just someone who loves Jesus Christ and follows in His way.

Thanks, snippy! Great article. My (liberal) son played basketball with Todd Palin. I’m not sure if it’s the city team that beat Russia or not, but he said he’s a great guy. He likes the Palin’s, but ARGGHHH, he’s voting for Obama. Time for mom to get on her knees.

Now, that’s the ticket!

How do I get one of these to stick on the grocery getter?

Would not be at all surprised to discover that he is...

Knock off the newbie slams. You’re not exactly an oldtimer yourself.

Thank you. I just had a feeling they might be Christians from their strong pro-life and anti-gay marriage stance. There are LOTS of churches in Anchorage. I went to an Assemblies Church when I visited many years ago, that my son and his wife attended and in which they were married.

Mary, does your son make money for a living? Does he really want to give it away. Obama was pretty clear when he spoke of his belief in the RE-distribution of wealth. I have liberals in my family also, there’s no explaining them. Yikes!

I sent him something that someone wrote about Obama and he really got mad about it. He said he was voting for Obama no matter what. I wrote back and told him to investigate him before he makes a decision. If he wants his taxes to go sky high and standard of living to go down...you get the idea.

There really isn’t any explaining to liberals. Their mindset is so different from conservatives. I have one conservative son, one liberal and one that has never registered to vote! Go figure.

“WOW! They make a very handsome couple.”

They really do, don’t they?

but right now the Palins are proving to be extraordinary.

The most amazing thing is how... By being quite "ordinary", in ways many in this country can relate to, as opposed to "The Zero" and his rarified airs, and associates...

*THIS* is a winning combination, hands down...

He looks like he might kick someone’s ass.

Don't see *that*... What I see is the face of a man capable of doing so, should need arise, but not looking to do so for no reason... In other words, a real man...

I wonder if the Palins are Christian? Anyone know? I would venture a guess and say yes...

From a quote or two attributed to her, I believe you guess correctly...

Lovely as the VP mansion in DC is, he will probably just hate living here. And who could blame him?

Certainly not I, and if he chose to "blow town" frequently to get back to "the real world" I would fault him (or her) not one bit...

My son in AK said he played basketball with him years ago. Says he’s a great guy.

That is really cool.

Now, if ONLY I could get this kid to vote for McCain instead of Obama.

If he doesn't grow up before election day you can always fix him a plate of brownies with ex-lax in them. ;)

I won't play that game. You haven't been around very long yourself. I made not personal attack or tried to intimidate anyone as you have done.

What was the point you were trying to make? I read your post, but it was incoherent.
