Choosing Mitt, Not Choosing Mitt
Jay Severin ^ | August 28, 2008 | Jay Severin

John McCain has reportedly chosen his running mate and will announce it tomorrow. It will leak today. Is it Mitt Romney? I hope so, and if you don't want President Obama, you'd better hope so, too - because if McCain does not choose Mitt, McCain loses.

Snip ... internal McCain polling shows that of all people he is considering for VP, Mitt Romney attracts the most votes.

In fact the polling shows a McCain ticket including Romney makes ONE OUT OF FIVE VOTERS MORE LIKELY TO VOTE FOR McCAIN - ACROSS PARTY LINES! (Nobody else scores like this.)

Snip I believe McCain is thin-skinned and hasn't forgiven Mitt for challenging him during he primary. McCain is a liberal and wants another liberal on the ticket - like Lieberman! A big part of my instinct - and McCain's words in the past few days - discourage me in believing it is Mitt. I dearly hope I am wrong. A bi part of me knows McCain wants to produce an 'out-of-the-box' choice - like a woman, maybe even pro-choice woman.

If he does, he will lose, and richly deserve to.ww

That said: I am counting on John McCain's wanting to win. That requires picking a winner, someone who gets you the win: Mitt Romney.

IMHO, Romney will cost just as many votes as he brings with him. Romney solidifies the base, but hurts McCain's maverick image and makes it harder for him to attract crossover votes (the old Reagan democrats.)

McCain has to do both if he is going to win.

I’ve been hooked on Intrading all day...Mitt is at 70 and Tim is in the teens.

Libbylu, I’m not prejudiced against Mitt. He’s my choice too. I just know he isn’t McCain’s.

Mitt is it!

‘It’ might not be VP, but I sure hope he’s the VP candidate. I really don’t want it to be Pawlenty.

“NOBODY could help McCain carry MA - except Karl Marx.”

LOL, and that’s the truth! I’m still deciding on where to move to!

Sorry if I’m a dope on this but, how reliable is Intrade?

I am beginning to believe self reliance has been
bred out of too many Americans.

They want no fault insurance for everything.

I thought the same thing,

Huckster’s big complaint was that Mitt was tough on him during the primary. Ridiculous.

I’m convinced that it’s a Mormon thing with him.

You can’t tease people like this.

Go McCain!

Mitt is it!

I have no idea but it's very exciting...Tim is climbing as we speak. Intrade picked Biden; he was at 80 right before the announcement. Mitt is still at 70. We shall see. ;)

Colorado really loves Mitt. At my caucus about 90% of those there were for him.

I think he would really firm up Colorado.

I don’t think Mitt could even help McCain carry his home state of MA. It ain’t Mitt.

Well who could then?

I don’t think Pawlenty does much of anything, but frankly the VP pick rarely does.

Exactly. The VP is more of a PR guy than anything else. This is what makes Romney such a good choice. He'll have 4-8 years to work the kinks out with the undecided in the mean time if he's going to make another presidential run.

No one, which is why he isn’t as important as other picks. MA is a lost cause.

I’m not a fan of Romney, or a fan of his fans, for that matter. In this modern era, and especially in supposedly mature and rational conservatives, zealous attachment to any politician seems very strange and distasteful to me. Nearly all of them, given enough opportunity and time, will disappoint their fans.
And the more zealous his admirers, the more suspect the man. One wonders if a large following indicates nothing more than an outstanding ability to mislead people.
There are exceptions; there are great men.
But I don’t trust Mitt Romney as far as I can toss him.
Nevertheless, he has obvious qualifications. Experience in leadership; yes, even experience in compromise. (For just one example: having shifted to pro-life, he isn’t likely to shift back.) Experience in business as well as in government.
And if he’s half as phony as I think he is, he won’t be gulled by Putin or Chavez, or the Chinese or the Arabs.
If, God forbid, President McCain should suddenly and unexpectedly leave his post (which would probably require a host of angels loaded for bear), Mitt Romney has probably the best shoulders to drop everything on.

It makes no sense for McCain to pick anyone else unless he’s an idiot...

And if he picks a pro-choice guy for VP, we might as well not vote for him, because he'll lose anyway. I hope he isn't an idiot.
