She never made partner at Sidley. She was an associate when she left. And she was only a first year associate (graduating in 1988) when she mentored Obama in the summer of 1989. She “quit” in 1991 to work for the Chicago city government. Three years is about the time the major firms start weeding out the associates who aren’t destined to become partners.
