Presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain may announce his choice for a running mate earlier than expected, sources told FOX News on Monday.
McCain had previously said he would announce his vice presidential pick on Friday and would appear with that individual at a rally in Dayton, Ohio, following the announcement. Friday is McCains 72nd birthday.
But sources close to McCains campaign told FOX News that his decision may come sooner than that possibly on Thursday, when Barack Obama accepts the Democratic nomination at Invesco field in Denver, Colo.
McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds diminished the news.
I wouldnt much weight into reports that there are windows of possibility, he said.
Several names have come up repeatedly as McCains possible running mate, including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and, perhaps, Democrat-turned-independent Joe Lieberman of Connecticut. Also named is Gen. David Petraeus, the incoming head of Central Command.

A woman running mate would be counterproductive. He’s already getting lots of Hillary supporters all by himself. If they see a Republican woman on the ticket they’ll just be reminded of what they don’t like about the GOP: women they don’t get along with.
Moreover, there are lots of Republican women who don’t like the idea of a woman president or vice president.
And then there’s the pander factor.
I really hope McCain doesn’t do anything to detract from his advantage in experience by selecting an inexperienced running mate.
It will be Romney.
Time to start thinking about retiring abroad in 20 years, conditions should be pretty frightening by then.
Kasich would be a fantastic pick.
“At this point, unless he chooses a pro-choice liberal, McCain has the Conservative vote.
I wouldn’t count on it. Many Conservatives will vote for him, but it’s out of fear and loathing of Obama. That’s not the same as “having the Conservative vote”, though.
If the polls show McCain winning by a respectable margin, many Conservatives will simply not cast a POTUS vote.
I choose not to be so cynical in life. Yeah, I may get burned, but people actually have a chance to change with me. Why preach conservative values if you won’t let people who formerly didn’t hold them embrace them in the future.
Janet is a democrat
Maybe he will surprise us all and pick FDT. I can live with Mitt but I will die vomiting if its Huckleberry hornpipe.
Sorry, but nonsense. Either he was lying before or he’s lying now. This is a guy who did more for liberalism in MA than any Dem ever could have done while he was in office. He mouths the words of conservatism and enacts extreme liberalism. He’s a fraud and absolutely the worst choice McCain could make for VP.
In life there are risks, even if that means telling the Hillary supporters they’re not needed for victory in the fall in the Republican party even as rock-ribbed Democrats, or picking Mitt Romney as the nominee.
When the GOP or McCain ask for money to support McCain, print and send them one of these.
Well, beyond that Pawlenty sold his soul to the ethanol subsidy crowd.
Your right . I forgot that little gem..
I couldn’t agree with you more.
I know.
Just a little levity to break the monotony.
The DBM/MSM would faint with Combs (not that I think it’s likely).
She’s 100% bullet-proof and 6’1” to boot. I’ve met her, love her. Just my wishes. She IS presidential.
Imagine stubby little ME (and European, for that matter) heads of state having to stare UP at her.
I don’t see any reason to be interested with this list of names, excepting Petraeus.
I’m a Conservative vote, and unless McCain makes a decision to nominate a true Conservative as VP (not Romney, Hutchinson, Lieberman etc), I won’t waste the time to vote for either one of the Liberals tickets.
I keep hoping that McCain and his team would recognize the base will be needed to win this election. But, until I see differently, I just don’t see any options. You have a Liberal and you have a Liberal light.
This is a chance for the McCain team to build a bridge...will they do it?
“This is a chance for the McCain team to build a bridge...will they do it?:
Doubtful.
