How can you be rejected from military service but then told he could be activated in a national emergency?

That describes me. I got my "Dear Upchuck" letter in early summer, 1967.

I took the physical and failed.

My draft status was changed from 1A to 1Y, meaning I would be called up only in a national emergency. When I asked for a definition of that, I was told, "only if the US is attacked."

I was never called up and grieved for many friends who went KIA in Viet Nam.

Thanks for clarifying the status. Seems people here really know the facts on just about everything. :>)
