Obama Adviser Larry Summers Advocates Permanently High Energy Prices
Harvard Magazine | September/October 2008 | Lawrence H. Summers

...

Almost certainly, now is not the moment for dramatic further price increases in energy, given the situation of the economy and the way in which consumers and many energy-using businesses are reeling. At the same time, with the economy getting used to far higher energy prices than were considered plausible even 18 months ago, it would be a great tragedy if prices were allowed to decline very sharply when the current crisis passes. So the crucial priority will be to maintain the momentum and incentive for savings caused by the current high-priced energy, whatever happens in the future.

Right now, of course, the focus is on the spike in energy prices. But greenhouse-gas emissions are closely related. Each year, the science on global warming becomes more sobering. Each year, our ability to hit Kyoto or other targets for controlling those emissions recedes. So that is a large part of any energy policy the next president has to pursue.

The article, entitled "The Economic Agenda: Challenges facing the next president", is not available online at http://harvardmagazine.com/ , although other leftist propaganda can be found at http://harvardmagazine.com/2008/07/unequal-america.html and was discussed at http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2055026/posts . I will post a link when it is online.

Summers does not rule out additional energy taxes now, just "dramatic" ones. He is clearly calling for energy taxes to be raised substantially if (horrors!) oil prices tank. He is an Obama economics advisor -- see http://www.nysun.com/national/summers-manages-low-profile-while-advising/84343/ .

We know it, but let's tell the American people. Liberals want high prices for energy. They think it's good for us.

Which commie boob? The one that wanted to implement cap and trade, while hiking gas taxes 50c?

I was with this guy, until he made a hard left into Kyoto, global warming and tax ‘em ‘till they bleed rhetoric.

Having oil prices remain at $85/barrel or so is a good thing, if America can take advantage of the situation. What I mean is that oil at that price makes it economical to drill for oil in more remote places and bring it to market. It is economical to extract oil from oil shale. It is economical to convert coal to synthetic petroleum. It gives impetus to expand nuclear electric generation. If the price drops, those ventures don’t take off because investors are worried about backing a bad business plan.

So, yes, I actually see potential benefit from higher oil prices. But the marxists are looking to exploit the situation as a means for less capitalism and market forces, and more government control over an impoverished America, all herded onto their collective farm.

Here's something I posted in July (bold type added):

"Just when a huge pent-up demand for energy has been unleashed in China and India (amongst other rapidly developing nations) — western governments are doing what they can to restrict new supply. These governments are motivated by the “global warming” panic to drastically reduce the consumption of oil. To them, high oil prices are not a problem — they are part of the solution."

The Democrat's Energy Policy:

Destroy the Economy

Lower the Standard of Living

Return to the 1800’s. Form the Holy Climatic Church as a state religion.

The American economic miracle of the 20th Century occurred because of low governmental regulation and taxation and low energy prices. So naturally a Leftist moron like Summers wants to mess that up.
