I think the Brits started out with green for their rifle troops in the Napoleonic wars. They and their weapons were too valuable to put in "shoot me" red, so they chose green as a form of semi-camouflage. The first Colonial rangers, also armed with rifles, were outfitted in a color now known as "ranger green". That color is supposed to be the basis of the now-disappearing "army green".

"Army blue" is okay, since blue has a long and honorable history. It would have been nice to have the leg stripe in the Branch's color, though.

Let's not forget the new Navy and Air Force uniforms, though.
