Century City Doctors Hospital Begins Shutting Down (Since 1996, 70 hospitals have closed in CA )
Los Angeles Times ^ | August 22, 2008 | Daniel Costello

Posted on 08/24/2008 4:14:21 AM PDT by kellynla

Financially troubled Century City Doctors Hospital gave up hope of finding a buyer and began shutting down Friday, according to hospital executives. Officially, the facility said it would cease operations late next week.

The hospital's emergency room -- a key element of the county's increasingly fragile emergency safety net -- will be closed today, and about 30 remaining patients will be discharged or transferred to nearby facilities beginning this weekend.

Regionally, 14 emergency rooms have been closed in the last five years, including 10 in Los Angeles County. After the closure, there will be 74 ERs remaining in the county.

On Friday, the hospital filed for financial liquidation under Chapter 7 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Employees said they didn't get paid this week; other employees said payroll checks they received had bounced.

Hospital executives said they were petitioning the federal Bankruptcy Court to use emergency funds to pay employees as early as next week but acknowledged that they might not be able to do so.

"I haven't been paid in two weeks and I'm afraid I'm just not going to get paid," Tamara Tobin, a nursing assistant, said as she arrived at the hospital Friday.

The 176-bed facility, on Century Park East in the Century City Medical Plaza, has tried for months to improve its finances but has struggled to pay its growing debt, which the hospital estimated in a recent interview with The Times at more $60 million.

"It's really unfortunate" the hospital is closing, said Pat Wolfram, its interim chief executive. "Even this morning, we were trying to get a buyer and remain open but it just didn't happen. This is a great hospital and it's very sad."

Slight correction... the dems support increasing their voting base by importing the turd world, but the GOP wants the invasion because of the cheap labor, and the downward pressure illegals put on the wages of citizens that can't (yet) be replaced by them.

Generally true. See #80...

That's one side of it. The other is white drug addicts, wastrels, and bums whose work habits lost them work in the construction and other industries.

It's also true that many, many illegal aliens are not any of the things you describe. They're very hard-working and honest.

That you see only one side says a great deal about you.

You didn't make a liar out of anybody. You made yourself into a ridiculous nit-picker and hypocrite. All kinds of laws are violated everyday, everywhere, by everyone. One has to have a little brains when judging other people's behavior...and I say that without in any way minimizing the terrible problem posed by illegal immigration IN HUGE NUMBERS.

I told you I had first hand experience, that I lived in a small , rural county, and served on the Board of Directors of the local hospital. I told you the hospital had come close to bankruptcy and was saved by the voters. I told you that I lobbied for the hospital in Sacramento.

How much imagination does it take to realize that I know personally most of the business owners and many of the voters? Do I have to spell out that I know how these people think and what their concerns are? Do you think I didn't have to deal with them when I was asking these same voters for money to keep the hospital open? Where do you think the business owners stood on the issue?

I told you...and you told me - very rudely - that you didn't believe me, that you sitting on a throne somewhere, had good reason to disbelieve my first hand experience.

I gave you a good source to check on the veracity of your disbelief. That's all you'll get from me. That's more than you deserve. Further I suggest a course in basic manners because yours would disqualify you from social intercourse in a sty.

“I’m done with the Republicans over illegal immigration?”

Well good luck with the Democrats. LOL

McAmnesty is for giving CITIZENSHIP TO ILLEGALS AND THEIR “RELATIVES”.

I get it your going to vote for the lesser of two evils. Illegal Immigration is this countries number one problem. Our culture is being eroded away. We are being forced to pay for this third world invasion, paying for education, medical, free housing, crime, food programs, energy, water shortages, dual language programs, etc....

“And voters”

Therein lies the problem. Anyone who votes either Republican or Democrat should not complain about Illegal Immigration. Both parties are complicit in allowing this third world invasion to destroy our nation. The ONLY recourse we have as citizens is to send a message and vote third party. Check out the Constitution Party.

“I say elect McCain and hold his feet to the fire. The place to have ejected McCain was the primaries.”

Just like we held Bush’s feet to the fire on illegal immigration.

First of all, I didn't TELL anyone what to do.

Next, it is the leftist policies that put such laws, as you mentioned, in force.

The people of Los Angles cannot afford to underwrite the Healthcare for Mexico. When the people of Los Angeles have had enough of it, they will elect different officials and change those laws.

That is not telling anyone what to do dingbat.

You cannot deductively interpret your experience in Sacramento as equivalent to other places or institutions in California I have been very involved with.

There is your difficulty; you have a very small mind...

If you are voting GOP or DNC this election...you are voting for illegal aliens...pretty much a vote for McCain is a wasted vote on America. If you are not voting third-party or independent this election....you will definitely be voting for a liberal

You are so right, RW.

A vote for third party / independent is a vote for Obama

Only if you assume that my vote is already bought and paid for by the RNC or that I want McAmnesty in office. If conversely, you assume that my vote belongs to the Dems, then you'd say that not voting is a vote for McAmnesty.

Ergo, your premise is wrong so your conclusion is incorrect.

"Others have closed in areas with large numbers of underinsured and uninsured patients, leaving access to hospital care in short supply in those areas."

I'm done with the Republicans over illegal immigration...

I reached that point some years ago.

You watch the word, "illegal alien" won't even be mentioned during their convention. Even if it is, it's way too late.

Just too many of their supporters are addicted to their low wage illegal labor. They have no desire to see their golden goose killed.

Voting for a third party usually helps the dem/rats.

Your general supposition that we are too weak to throw the rinos out and install a conservative base once again in the republican party is not accepted by everyone.
