Sen. Hutchison: ‘I do not want to be vice president’
The Hill ^

Posted on 08/23/2008 6:35:37 AM PDT by WilliamReading

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) reiterated Tuesday that she has no interest in becoming Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) running mate.

During an interview on MSNBC, Hutchison said, “I don’t want to be vice president. I’ve said that over and over again. I’m going in a different direction. I really do not want to be vice president.”

Pressed on whether she would turn McCain down, Hutchison responded, “I think there are a lot of people who are qualified to be president who could be vice president. And he’s got a lot of factors to consider. And what states he needs to carry, who are people qualified who have some national experience to be able to take over as president, some great governors. So I think that he’s going to have ample choices.”

Hutchison, who is said to be considering a gubernatorial bid in 2010, added, “I want to be helpful. I want to be on the team. I do not want to be vice president.”

On paper at least, Hutchison would be a slam-dunk for John McCain, pleasing all of the GOP constituencies and really appealing to the Hillary Clinton Democrats who are furious with Obama over his VP Choice.

Hutchison is the only credible alternative to Mitt Romney, who otherwise seems headed to be on the ticket.

She said earlier this year that she isn't interested in being the VP, but things can change in a hurry if John McCain asks her.

Who would be the stronger pick for VP?

I'd like to see Gov. Sarah Palin. She has strong conservative credentials, especially on life and energy, as well as executive experience.

And what better way to confound the feminazis than to pick a hottie.

Palin probably knows less about foreign affairs than Obama does. She would be skewered by Biden in a debate.

I also like Heather Wilson of New Mexico, but her name never even comes up on the radar screen.

IMO, at 65 she’s too old for this role.

Besides, she’s doing enough harm as a Senator. (WRT illegal immigration)

I wouldn't be so sure. Gov. Palin, like any other governor, most likely did not get to where she is without breaking a few balls. But I've not seen her debate so I can't say with certainty that she would be a flop against Biden. Besides, Biden's mouth is his own worst enemy anyway.

I also like Heather Wilson of New Mexico

I agree, Rep. Wilson would also be a fine choice. It is always heartening to see a conservative with balls.

John McCain’s choice MUST BE somebody that the American people can look at and say “If, God forbid, John McCain were to die in office, I can envision this person as the President.”

I’m sorry, but I cannot say that about any of the women mentioned, and truthfully, few of the men. I think the choice has to come from one of only two or three of the primary candidates - and Fred is too old.

She’s a ball-breaker, alright. So much so that she’s being investigated for abuse of office.

Thank God for that. And we don’t have any interest in you becoming Gov of TX either, Kay.

Tim Pawlenty really seems so underqualified for the job.

I think that McCain almost has to pick Romney from the current field. He would rather pick Tom Ridge, but he appears to have be taken off the short list.

What about General David Petraeus? He would be a great choice.

If we are going down that path, how about this? (my own creation...:)

Now, I would rather see Duncan Hunter as VEEP, but...hey, anyone but Joe Lieberman...I think Lieberman is fine as a person and I appreciate his stance on the war (his being shunned by the libs is also a check on that side of the ledger) but he IS a liberal at heart. It makes me queasy to think about.

Petraeus is a brilliant man, but we don’t know what kind of politician he would make. I agree, I would be thrilled to see him in there...LEADING the ticket...:)

I would prefer Palin, but it is important that McCain pick a woman now that Obama has abandoned them. Hutchinson would be ok.
