GORI, Georgia (AP) A top Russian general on Saturday said his country's forces will continue to patrol a main Georgian Black Sea port city even though it lies outside the 'security zones" where Russia claims it has the right to station soldiers on Georgian territory.
The statement by deputy head of the general staff Col.-Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, reported by Russian news agencies, came a day after Russia said it had pulled back forces from Georgia in accordance with a cease-fire agreement that Russia interprets as allowing it a substantial military presence.
On Saturday afternoon, several thousand protesters waving Georgian flags approached the Russian position on the outskirts of the strategic city of Gori. Some soldiers came out of their trenches, but there was no immediate sign of unrest.

Yes I see today he is claiming that Georgia is planning ‘subversive acts’ again, claims that Georgian special forces are arming to stage ‘provocations’.

The action by the Russian military raises the question of how much control does President Medvedev and Prime Minister Putin have over the Russian military? They want respect as a major power, but they’re creating questions about themselves that is very, very embarassing for a wannabe major power. Not good.

Good question. Dont know. BTW - I think this is why the Russians are having a hard time giving up Poti. Image from Google.

The Russians have a Black Sea Port problem in the short term. Their lease runs out in Ukraine and their new port that they are building up in Russian territory wont be ready for quite a few years after that. So they will be forced to make a move for the Crimean and Sevastopol or they will really want this Poti port. Rail-lines and roads go from this port on the Black Sea to Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea so besides its military implications it also has economic importance.

Russian ship returns from Georgian coast to base in Ukraine
SEVASTOPOL, August 23 (RIA Novosti) - One more Russian ship returned Saturday from Georgian waters to the Black Sea Fleet's base in the Ukrainian port of Sevastopol.
The mine-sweeper Turbinist had taken part in Russia's "peace enforcement" operations in Georgia.

“Nogovitsyn also warned that Russia could increase the size of its force in Georgia if the United States begins to help Georgia rebuild its military. “
And this says it all.

Yeah, this is how wars start. The Russians are really, really, pushing it. They respond to resolve so lets hope we maintain some.

AP:Chaotic crowds of people and cars were jammed outside the city as Georgian police tried to control the mass return by setting up makeshift checkpoints an ironic echo of the Russian checkpoints that had ringed the city a day earlier.Ironic to AP.

In an interview with the AP, South Ossetian leader Eduard Kokoity indicated that ethnic Georgians will not be allowed to return to their homes in South Ossetia. "There is nothing left anymore" for them to come back to, he noted. South Ossetia was 30% ethnic Georgian.

Looks like there is gonna be a showdown at Poti. Humanitarian Aid verses Russian entrenched roadblocks. That is what I have been thinking...

It really does, my friend. And we have already said, or NATO has said, that we will help them rebuild their military.

Pooti Poot needs a Poti port like he needs a Port-a-Potty.
Try saying that three times fast.
