Obama Deserves Chance to Lead Country

Why am I so angry that public radio and Newsweek used the terms rock star and rock-star presence to describe Illinois Sen. Barack Obama? Because it is false and demeaning. There is nothing wrong with being a rock star if that's what you are, but Obama is not. He is, rather, a serious politician running for high office.

Also, I am tired of hearing that the media are liberal. In 2000, the corporate media, with help from the voters and the U.S. Supreme Court, elected George W. Bush president. Al Gore was too wooden, and wouldn't you rather have a beer with Bush? Besides, the Bush press plane was more fun.

Then these so-called liberal reporters joined Fox News and other major networks in beating the drums for war, serving as cheerleaders for the Bush administration. Moreover, they failed to report outright wrongdoing. The New York Times knew for a month that an Afghan detainee named Dilawar had been tortured to death in U.S. custody in Afghanistan. After a month, The Times ran a story about his death far from the front page. If The Times and other media had done their jobs properly, perhaps the Iraq war, Abu Ghraib and other atrocities never would have happened.

In 2004, the corporate media overlooked that President Bush had a less-than-adequate performance in the National Guard, and that Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry's honorable military record was being falsified and used against him. Besides, Kerry was a flip-flopper, a wind surfer, and not very well-liked by some.

I support Obama for president because he is not a Republican and because he has not already badly failed us. He has not had everything given to him.

Family and influence are not how he became the presumptive Democratic Party presidential nominee. I believe that Obama deserves four years to see what we can do under his leadership.
