I thought that what they theorized was that the act of observation caused the theoretical existence of all the possible multiple states (in this case just 2), to go away leaving just the one ‘state’ to exist in the universe of the observer.

Or, am I really saying the same thing?

Hmm, probably the same thing : ) But Einstein and Schrodinger did not like the outcome, to say the least. That is why Schrodinger came up with the cat in the box mind experiment to illustrate how ludicrous the Copenhagen Convention was.
