Well, while probably and likely are reasonable for proof when no other proof exists, there was written proof in the quoted information on the Missouri incident.

“I have received by Amos Reese, Esq., of Ray county, and Wiley C. Williams, Esq., one of my aids, information of the most appalling character, which entirely changes the face of things, and places the Mormons in the attitude of an open and avowed defiance of the laws,”


You put people in a ‘seat of excitement’ with your last two paragraphs. The image you conjure up of a picture of 100’s of soldiers riding horses, with the latest rifles, hunting down Mormons like a foxhunt in the English woods, would indicate you know little about the history of Missouri.
