RIP Gene Upshaw

Just damn! Although I didn’t agree with his union tactics, especially the walkouts in 1982 and brief on in 1974, Gene Upshaw, Jim Otto and Otis Sistrunk were my favorite black and silver linemen...RIP Gene, you were one of the great ones.

I had some disagreements with some of the union tactics as well.
He was a great player. Prayers to his wife and children.

I guess this explains why he wanted to stay on as the NFLPA head, because he knew it wasn’t going to be much longer anyway. Luckily he had millions to attempt all he could to prolong his life as much as possible. One wonders why he consistently fought to prevent helping other vets who weren’t as fortunate as himself. You know, the vets who made the game what it is today, I’m not talking about free handouts here people, though some will think that.

WOW!
Rest in Peace Gene. You were one heck of a player. A lousy head of the NFLPA, but one of the best Guards of all time.

Yep—notice I just talked about his playing the game, not his league politics.

One wonders why he consistently fought to prevent helping other vets who werent as fortunate as himself. Not his job. Besides that, lots of the old vets elected to take early pensions, reducing their benefits. They now complain they aren't getting enough.

Jim Otto was silver?

Great player, great Union President. I know that CA of the pancreas or, "canc of the panc" is caused by both chronic boozing and chronic smoking to a huge degree.
He's gone way to soon from all of us. A great sport has lost one of its best servants RIP, as the ref's whistle sounds one last time!
