Senior official says Russian peacekeepers will continue to occupy Georgia even after main bulk of army has left.
A senior Russian government spokesman today said the withdrawal of the country's forces from Georgia would take "a couple of weeks" and they would leave in their own time.
While the Russian army was reducing its presence in some towns it has occupied, it was continuing to take new territory and still held positions as near as 30 miles to the capital.
"They [the Georgians] are perverting the agreement," he said. "The agreement doesn't indicate a specific time for withdrawal.
There has still been little or no change in the positions held by the Russians near the capital and throughout much of the region.
Saakashvili said that while Russia was withdrawing troops in some places, "they are going around now and trying to grab new strategic areas in Georgia".

So you actually believe the Russians are liars, from the President on down??????????????????
Ahmadinejad: the US could not Protect Georgia
He said that it is impossible for a country like the US to attack Iran, which even cannot protected a country like Georgia in Caucasus. He said that the US has nothing to put forward against Iran. Moreover, indicating the economic crisis in the US and the latest developments in Caucasus, Ahmadinejad claimed that the influence of the US was getting weaker on the world politics.
Well after this I sure would never ever do business with a Russian nationalist, but I wont hold that against all ethnic Russians. In fact I have done business with quite a few over the years here in the States (US citizens) and have had no problems. I think the problem in Russia are Chekists (old KGB) with loser complexes (Cold War) who are trying to right their previous losses.
lol, the author is hoping if he makes his assertion boldly, loudly, the lemmings will think its a fact.
Two U.S. Navy ships, including a guided missile destroyer USS McFaul, and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter are getting underway to transport humanitarian assistance supplies to Georgia, U.S. European Command (EUCOM) said on August 21.
It said USS McFaul (DDG 74) departed from Souda Bay, Crete, on Wednesday and the cutter Dallas (WHEC 716) will depart later this week.
McFaul and Dallas are scheduled to transit into the Black Sea and arrive in Georgia within a week, according to the U.S. European Command.
The announcement comes after it was reported that Turkey gave its go-ahead to sail through its straits into the Black Sea.
Meanwhile, a team of U.S. European Command, led by Army Brig. Gen. John Miller, is already in Tbilisi to assess the current humanitarian situation and make recommendations on continued humanitarian support to senior military leadership.
Looks like planet earth is going to have two time metrics now. World time and Russian time.
