A good Lieberman speech could change the calculus of this election. Lieberman doesn't speak like Zell Miller, with the cadences of a Baptist preacher. When Zell speaks, his intensity can be scary if he is saying something inflammatory. Lieberman has this hangdog, aw-shucks manner of speaking that is disarming but which permits him to say the most inflammatory things without generating fear.
So imagine a speech in which Joe Lieberman indicts his old party, but not its rank-and-file members. It is a sorrowful, "The Democratic Party has lost its way," kind of speech. Imagine ending the speech with a series of inflammatory applause lines delivered in his aw-shucks manner. "The Democratic Party believes in fill-in-the blank, but not fill-in-the-other-blank." For example, "The Democratic Party believes in the United Nations, but not the United States." A good speech by a man leaving his old party -- because it left him first -- could turn into a genuine media event.
WGAS about Liebermann, I was talking about Julie Annie.
Has there ever been someone who ascended as high as Lieberman (VP nominee) to defect and cross over so quick (just 8 years?)
Joe left his old party over their criticism of his support for the war. Other than that, Joe is still a very liberal Democrat.
Neither McCain, Rudy, or Joe are representative of the GOP and besides, I doubt many dems will be watching the GOP convention anyway. Who would he really be talking to that he can influence?
