Cross us and we will crush you, warns Medvedev
The Times ^ | 8/19/2008 | Kevin O'Flynn in Moscow

Posted on 08/19/2008 9:36:47 PM PDT by bruinbirdman

President Medvedev of Russia yesterday promised a “shattering blow” against any foreign power that moved against Russian citizens.

The threat will compound the fears of former Soviet states, which are concerned that they could be next after Russia’s attack on Georgia.

“If someone thinks they can kill our citizens, kill soldiers and officers fulfilling the role of peacekeepers, we will never allow this,” Mr Medvedev told a group of Second World War veterans in Kursk. “Anyone who tries to do this will receive a shattering blow.”

He continued: “Russia has the capabilities - economic, political and military. Nobody has any illusions left about that.”

Russia’s incursion into Georgia, and its reluctance to leave, has alarmed former Soviet states such as Ukraine and the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

The war was designed in part to send a message to the former Soviet states that “you can’t solve your problems by running to give the West a hug”, Liliya Shevtsova, an analyst at the Carnegie Centre in Moscow, said.

At the start of the war, Mr Medvedev said it was his constitutional right to defend the “lives and dignity” of Russian citizens. Georgia’s allies now fear that Russia will begin to throw its weight around in defence of the millions of ethnic Russians who live outside the motherland.

The break-up of the Soviet Union left a huge Russian diaspora outside the country. There are more than 8 million ethnic Russians in Ukraine, 4.5 million in Kazakhstan and 1.2 million in the Baltic states.

Russia justified its attack on Georgia by insisting that it was acting to protect the 90 per cent of South Ossetians who have Russian passports.

Bush’s message to al-Qaeda. Then al-Qaeda flocked to Iraq and were crushed by Iraqi and U.S. backed coalition forces. I’m suprised you Paulistas are still gloating about Americans being killed in Iraq when al-Qaeda has been soundly defeated. You folks and the far left used to gloat about U.S. casulties in Iraq, but after the success of the surge, it’s suprising you’re still trying to gloat about al-Qaeda’s short lived success in Iraq. Here you are appearently trying to draw moral equivlence to Russia’s invasion of Georgia with the coalition’s invasion of Iraq.

P.S. How’s your troofer candidate Baldwin doing in the polls?

I think you have me confused with somebody else, it might be an honest mistake.

Are you prepared to back up with evidence any post of mine over nine years that gloated about any American death in any war, or any statement I gave in support of Ron Paul for President in the 2008 primaries or now, or any statement where I said publicly that I had decided on my 2008 vote and that it was for Baldwin?

I am waiting.

If you cannot find such a post, you are obligated to make a public apology.

Start searching. I am challenging you here. Review your post to me just now and revise it accordingly as necessary.

Lissen up, it's OK to feel sorry for the Georgians, but there's not that much we can do when one of our pals pulls a really dumb move and gets hurt.

IMHO, our esteemed ally pulled one of the dumb moves of history when they decided to try and militarily crush the Russian-supported separatist rebels in South Ossetia. Folks on this site don't seem to understand that there was a large CIS (read Russians) Peace-Keeping force in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, by prior arrangement between Georgia, the UN, and the Russkis.

These CIS Peacekeepers (and distributors of cool weapons to the local rebels...Read Russians) had radios and telephones, so when the Georgians attacked, they called for help from the Russians conveniently waiting across the border, and counter-attacked big time. You know the results.

Russkis, Ossetians, Abkhazians:---------------1
Our pals, those lovable Democratic Georgians: 0

The Georgians got themselves royally trick-f##ked. I expected smarter moves from these rug merchants, horsetraders, and cardsharps. They kicked the Bear and got bitten. Surprise. Surprise.

So now, what the hell are we supposed to do? Send in Obama?

Let’s do it Now,

Zero chance of that ever happening, even though I agree it's the right course. Short of attacking directly controlled US land, we will never take Russia head on.

“IMHO, our esteemed ally pulled one of the dumb moves of history when they decided to try and militarily crush the Russian-supported separatist rebels in South Ossetia. “

that is an interesting spin on the story, but the further the situation is examined the less plausible it sounds.
The russians had been planning this for months.
Russian propoganda is not very subtle.

It wasn’t really an issue of “if” Russia would invade, but rather how much could the Georgians withstand without attempting to defend themselves.
Yes - those stupid idiots finally attempted to protect themselves from these “peacekeepers” - not realizing (and this was the dumb part) that russia had already readied its invading forces, waiting for Georgia to make that dumb move.

“So now, what the hell are we supposed to do? Send in Obama?”

Well...isn’t this the perfect time for Obama to deliver on his promise that he will practice a different type of politics of hope and change?
Didn’t he announce his Coming in Berlin?
What a perfect opportunity for the Chosen to work his wonders on Putin.
Obama’s words will bring out the best in Putin. Putin will see the error in his ways, and will honor any agreement he makes with Obama.
This is the change we all have been waiting for!

You know that won’t happen: We’ll make the same mistake
that was made in 1939.

“Are you prepared to back up with evidence any post of mine over nine years that gloated about any American death in any war”

What, specifically, were you alluding to, when you said “ “Bring it on” Where have I heard THAT kind of talk before.....??”?

“If you cannot find such a post”

You had already admitted that you support Baldwin and Barr while admitting that you’re here trying to discourage people from voting for McCain, knowing full well that if McCain loses, Obama wins:

Russian propaganda is not very subtle.

Heads should roll in the CIA over this. I knew this ... you knew this...and the Georgians and the CIA didn't? Hahd to believe.

Instead of having unruly, hard-to-govern autonomous provinces, now the Georgians will soon have none. The Russians will ... largely ... leave, but not before taking anything that isn't nailed down, including our Humvees, forcing our man to resign, and making a sweetheart pipeline deal.

After it's all over, by all means send in Obama for a speaking tour. Those poor dumb Georgian bastards will need a few laughs.
