Australians Freeze Carrying Global Warming Relay Torch
NewsBusters ^ | August 19, 2008 | P.J. Gladnick

Who says that Mother Nature doesn't have a sense of humor? First we have an August 14 report from the Lithgow Mercury in Australia announcing a Climate Torch relay to draw attention to the importance of global warming:

The Olympic torch relay might not have made it to our part of the world but tomorrow Lithgow will share in another torch relay of global importance.

And you are invited to take part.

An organisation called GetUp! has arranged a Climate Torch relay from Hassans Walls lookout to Queen Elizabeth Park as part of a nation-wide campaign to focus even more attention on the impact and urgency of global warming.

A spokesman said that through GetUp! the community has an opportunity to show the nation’s leaders how important the issue is to the man and woman in the street.

“By taking part in this Australia wide campaign the people of Lithgow can show the rest of the country that we are prepared to stand up — and walk —for what we believe in,” she said.

Anyone who can’t make it to Hassans Walls for the start is welcome to join in anywhere along the route to the park.

The Climate Torch was designed by the same people who designed the Olympic Torch.

“It is solar and wind powered, just in case the pollies need a hint, and people power will get it to its final destination in Canberra,” she said,

Climate events coordinator Richie Merzien said Lithgow had been chosen to be part of the relay because of its unique environmental significance.

I think it is more a case of God having a sense of humor than “mother nature”.

That being said-

Here in Arkansas, we are having a record Summer, particularly for an August. We have had more rain this August than anyone can remember - and it is only the 19th. Add to that the high temps over the last week have been about 10 degrees cooler than normal. Today, the temp only got to 80 (usually still milking out the last of our 100 degree days), and we had yet another rain shower. Tomorrow, the forecast high is 76 degrees... in AUGUST, in Arkansas...

Yeah - lots of global warming here....

If this is Global Warming (or Climate Change), then I will take it!

Here in Arizona, we have had rain almost every day the last two weeks. We're starting to get mosquitoes.

Here in SW WI, the weather forecasts 2x-3x called for “high 80s, with 90 degrees in the valleys and heat indexes of over 100”. While it hit 90 in La Crosse, where they have a lot of concrete, I live in a valley and it has never gotten above 86 or so. We have had several nightime temps below 50 during this summer.Tomatoes are taking forever to turn red. This is the second year we haven’t even bothered to put the a/c in the bedroom and three years ago, we put it in and never used it.

We have heated the 38’x18’ above ground pool 3x so far in AUGUST. Usually, we are blocking the sun, running the pump at night, dumping water to add cold water and doing all we can to keep it at 82. This year, it has never once gotten over 82 with just sun and it has only reached that temp very late in the afternoon. We have had many days of N or NNE winds, another thing that is unusual.

I am unsure of this coming winter. Jusy like last year, NOAA gives our area a 33%-50% chance of being warmer than *normal*. I just saw my first wooly bear caterpiller and the stripes were absolutely even between black and brown, FWIW. But, we are planning for a cold one, just in case.
