(Bill)Clinton: State Can Be Clean Energy Leader, Reid Says Going Green Would Create Jobs

LAS VEGAS -- How do we make Nevada and the rest of the country more energy efficient? That's the question environmental experts and politicians are hoping to answer at a two-day summit at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Former President Bill Clinton kicked off the event Monday night with a challenge to the Silver State.

The former president said the only way to get everyone on board to go green is to make one state completely clean energy self-sufficient -- and he thinks Nevada has what it takes.

“Maybe what you ought to do is come out of this conference with is a proposal to have the national government and investors all over America say, ‘Help us make the first completely self-sufficient energy state in the U.S.’ I promise if you do it, it would rock the world,” Clinton said.

"Going green" only makes sense if, by choosing green, you're creating more value for the consumer. While some people would fall on their faces to show how small their "carbon footprint" is, I don't think everyone is willing to pay a premium for it. Even for those that have more disposable income, I think there's a limit to what they'll pay.

So I might be willing to incorporate "green" technologies into heating and cooling my house, if those technology costs are roughly comparable to today's less enviro-friendly options. But even if the were comparable in costs, I would also ask: "how do they perform?"

Does a solar-powered water heater work as quickly and efficiently as my gas furnace? Does my windmill provide me (or Las Vegas) with enough electrical power to withstand my peak demands? Are the operational costs the same? If we can't answer "yes" to these questions, the answer for going green will ultimately be "no."

What these eco-whackos are trying to do is change our economic value system, and I don't think it's going to work.

If I owned a strip joint in Vagas I would be very worried.
Harry Reid lives on the yellow brick road.

People that get to Vagas for vaction get there on Jets that use gas or cars that use gas.

Harry Reid is a very dangerous man. He is like Nancy Pelosi,

I will lay you odds they both are invested in wind power in the Texas Panhandle and will continue the refusal to drill for oil off the coast.

Nancy has about 250k invested in wind power with T Boone Pickens. The IPO was sent out Privately before the public was allowed to see what was going on. Nancy has no shame.

The conflict of interest is almost as glaring as Obama’s deal on his mansion in Chicago. He got a 300k dollar discount on his digs from the top criminal in Chicago.

Clinton is no doubt there to reinforce Las Vegas’ motto.

Going green would create jobs?

That’s the communist idea at work. Want more construction jobs, easy abolish bulldozers. Want more seamstress jobs, abolish sewing machines.

How wonderful it must have been in 1800.

You are being way too logical and asking way too many questions. Just accept the idea because it feels good and “hope” that this new “change” is one that we can “all believe in.”

"Going green" only makes sense if, by choosing green, you're creating more value for the consumer.

That's why the best indication of sensible "going green" is your pocket: Whatever saves money should be done.

A few examples:

Superinsulation for your house? Yes, pays for itself by lowering your heating bill

Compact fluorescent lightbulbs? Yes, not only do you need fewer over time, you also save more money on your electricity bill than the cost of the lightbulbs (Exception 1.) If you absolutely can't stand the somewhat different light spectrum. Exception 2.) Crawlspace lights that are only used for five minutes every other week).

Buying exactly as much car as you actually need? No easier way to save money

Modern turbo- / supercharged gasoline engines with smaller displacement (Ford Ecoboost etc.)? Usually pay for themselves within 2 years or so.

On the other hand:

Buying Al Gore's carbon certificates.... Are you kidding me???
