...so you grab your wheel barrel...

What happens if my wheel barrel is in the shop?

Just wondering.

And missles from our subs could do the same thing to whomever we wanted to, too. MADD

I may be labeled a doofus for this one but could the solution be as simple as covering essential electrical equipment and wiring with some material that will protect it from outside radiation or an EMP?

“What happens if my wheel barrel is in the shop?”

I guess you could just hook up your horse to the buckboard and just trot over to Safeway :)

You can just use your rain barrow.

This sounds frightening, but there is an obvious question. The instant the USSR put Sputnik into space (1957), it had the capability to do this to us. We gained the capability to do the same thing to them within a couple of years. Why did both sides then see a need to build thousands of nuclear bombs wit which to flatten each other’s cities, when only a couple would have been enough to send the other side back to the early 19th century (minus its animal and steam powered infrastructure)?

On the other hand, EMP weapons do exist that work at close range, and they need not even be nuclear; a strong argument against electronic gun safes without manual key backups.

Faraday cage.

...will have no effect in dissipating an EMP.
A Faraday cage blocks out external static electrical fields. Not all electro-magnetic fields.

Why would you take your wheelbarrow over to a store that has no communication system either? When was the last time you saw a Mega-Mart that was using old style cash registers?

For that matter, when was the last time you saw products with prices stamped on them? EVERYTHING is in the computers!

This author hasn't really thought his little doomsday scenario through...

This guy has, however.

Anybody watch Jericho? Tad different, but similar.

Many muslims would be only too happy to return to a 9th century lifestyle.

I understand that anything with micro chips will be effected, anything with the old vacume tubes will not. Considering that, what the hell will be the dif if everything we have is run on micro chips etc and there wont be any radio stations on line after the event, so the old vacume tube radios wont work anyways.

Aren’t mobile homes covered with metal and the windows covered with aluminum wire screens? And, isn’t this a perfect faraday cage?

Some work has been done, but large segments of the military infrastructure could be crippled by a relatively small attack.
There is considerable debate as to the severity of an attack with many factors to consider, (single vs. multiple warheads, warhead yield, distance from the blast, type and configuration of the equipment exposed, etc.). But even if the worst-case scenario is overstated and an attack simply severely degrades the infrastructure of half the Eastern seaboard, the result would still be catastrophic.

So which is it? Universal horizon to horizon? or that there are gradations (e.g. 'relatively small attack?').
The main problem is as far as I know, there is no 'civil defense' clearing house to provide actual knowledge about this type of attack, hence no way to the vast majority of Americans to assess the risks and provide for contingencies.

But more than anything, this underscores the lack of seriousness attributed to the 911 attack and the resulting ongoing effects on Americans.
Presumably, my government protects me, not foreign nationals including terrorists. Our Constitution protects us, not the entire world (including terrorists and terrorist sponsor nations). Let's review the highlights of the effects thus far, which in addition to the tens of trillion$ hidden everywhere, has impacted all our lives for the worse; no one is spared:

Airline travel is not the same, and the solution continues to be ignored -- ban nationals from certain nations from traveling in the US --- period; Our airlines are ll teetering on bankruptcy; most Americans will cease to be able to travel by airliner soon.
Cease granting visas of any sort, including diplomatic ones, to ALL muslim nations, and members of OPEC.

From the energy crisis to universal price increases directly attributable to 911 and its terrorist sponsor states (Saudi Arabia, Iran, Lybia, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Pakistan) the magnitude of the price we are paying simply boggles the mind, yet our "leadership" keeps treating terrorism as a 'civil rights' issue. Can it get any more insane than that? Seven years after 911?

I am sure that enough knowledge exists about EMP for Americans who care can educate themselves if the government simply chose to share information that the enemy almost certainly has right now. Why doesn't it?

So many questions, so little competence...

An electro magnetic field cannot go inside a faraday cage- the current would run along the outside surface

EMP has been vetted in this forum before.

My recollection is that most sources who seemed to know what they were talking about dismissed EMP as panning out as a serious threat, outside of a full scale or nearly full scale nuke assault by someone with very big, highly advanced weapons that could be detonated at very high altitude (read: Russia). Against a nation state, MAD should come into play.

Also, there was something about the EMP effects not really being that destructive to most electronics, except in a smaller than expected radius. However, the impact on the electric grid could be more serious.

I’m sure others have the details on this.

MADD is totally worthless when dealing with asymmetric warfare and 100,000,000 insane irrational subhumans out to conquer a seemingless helpless world.
As 911 should have made crystal clear.

We are still educating terrorists, providing flying lessons for them, allowing them to identify future targets; just name it, and some maggot is among us doing it right this minute!.
Talk about providing them with the rope with which to hang us!
