Push for UN vote on Georgia truce by week's end (can US "Diplomats" get anymore pathetic?)

Sponsors of a UN Security Council resolution to formalize the ceasefire deal between Russia and Georgia pushed for a vote by week's end, but Moscow balked at inserting any reference to Georgia's territorial integrity.

"Yes ideally, we would like a vote this weekend," a Western diplomat close to the bargaining involving European, US and Russian diplomats told AFP Friday.

"But we'll take as long as it takes. We are not going to push for a vote if we know that the Russians will veto the text -- which does not mean we have to give in to all their demands... There has to be hard bargaining," said the diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity."

Other diplomats said the 15-member Council was expected to hold new consultations Sunday on a new draft meant to formalize the French-brokered agreement reached by Moscow and Tbilisi to end fighting for control of the breakaway Georgian enclaves of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

By the time its watered down, it will be the most worthless document ever written. Even more worthless than a sanction against Saddam Hussein or a condemnation of Israel. That worthless.

Hmm. Will someone be "jumping" from the UN building this weekend?

The word applies more to the current leadership in the Whitehorse. No back bone.

"We can do business with this man", wasn't that what jorge said about putin.

No NATO expansion. NATO is pretty much the US military with a few extra battalions.

Beside the US, who in NATO has a military that could fight a major war? And we want to commit ourselves to defending states landlocked in Eurasia against Russia? If Georgia was in NATO, we still could not have done anything. Most of the European Union would just have bailed.

We need to make the EU take a serious interest in its own defense. We can not patrol the world. No nation that has ever tried that ended well.

The United Kingdon, Turkey, the Poles, the Czechs, and several others would be able to join with us and be strong members in providing security for Georgia in terms of basing.

If they decided to do so, Germany, Italy, and Spain could also. Of those, perhaps Italy and Germany would at this time.

I expect the Ukraine would too as soon as they were a member.

As to protecting Gerogia...1st of all it is not land locked. Second of all, it borders Turkey who has a vested interest in Russia not expanding to its own border and who has a strong military.

I believe Georgia and the Ukraine should become members of NATO and hope they do.

I know it is fun to take unkind potshots at the diplomatic community, but where would we be without them?

Have any of YOU ever suffered a severe papercut, while delivering an overly stiff Note?

Ever withstood the pricks and stabs of over stuffed paperclips or bent staples?

What about strained muscles from carrying White Papers from office to meeting after meeting, to yet other offices?

Sprained wrists & carple tunnel from backslapping & handshaking for hours at a time?

Writer's cramp?

I thought not!

Diplomacy is a dangerous, thankless task, fraught with perils of which you know naught!

Those in the Diplomatic Corps recognize they who serve in front of the buffet lines, and in the trenchers of State Dinners, risking clogged arteries, cirrhosis of the liver, or that fate worse than death, laryngitis, have the most difficult, thankless role of all

They sometimes wish for the simple life of ease of a soldier at a forward fire-base...but then the dinner gong duty calls them back to Reality.
