They were successful in imposing someone else's historic imperialistic rule, and paying off some WW2 debts in the trade. The difference is that they were clever enough to use the US as their foil and, while the Russians used their irregulars as well, they had to go in themselves.
If you want to get honest about it, the same NATO that happily separated Kosovo from FRY gave Russia the go ahead to dump on Georgia by leaving their membership on a back burner.
Territorial integrity appears to be a good thing only after the territories have been properly reassigned.

I understand that and I don’t think he was a bad man because of it. His beliefs were a reflection of his time. But, they were silly nonetheless. This includes the statements about Russia.
They know who they are.
