A pit bull that severely mauled a young girl inside her East Anchorage home Tuesday afternoon was shot by a neighbor who followed screams to the scene to find the girl's baby sitter fighting the dog in the front yard.
The girl's injuries were so severe that witnesses at first told police the 6-year-old was dead, killed in the attack by one of her family's pets.
The girl, however, was still alive and was rushed to Alaska Native Medical Center, where she underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon for what police called life-threatening injuries to her neck and head. Her mother was at the hospital.
"The girl has been transported in critical condition to the hospital," police Lt. Paul Honeman said. "It took a long time to get that girl stabilized."

Apparently so.
I guess all of us would have to be in on this conspiracy, too. Since everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, has heard of at least dozens of horrendous pitbull attacks, this would have to mean that all of us have heard of or had personal exposure to at least hundreds of horrendous attacks by other breeds.
What . . . that’s not the case?
Oh, never mind.
/s
How many times do those breeds KILL and FEED on a human being, as well as relent only after being SHOT multiple times?
You want to proffer your post as fact, provide at least a semblance of a link, please.
I suppose there’s a worldwide conspiracy to hype shark attacks even though dolphin and stingray and such MAUL, MAIM, and KILL humans even more often.
Please.
In fact, that is how pit bulls got their name.
For sport, a large and deep pit would be dug. A hungry bull terrier would be put in the pit and then bunches of rats released for the dog to attack and kill while dopes cheered.
If you’re stating facts, you should have a link.
Your personal experience with one dog is not relevant to the overall nature of the breed.
Even though other breeds do bite more frequently, they do not do the immediate dammage a pit bull does. As someone else said on this thread, terrier ownership should only be by those that know how to handle them. On the other hand, no large dog should be left alone with any small or young child, period.
The other thing that pit bulls do that is unlike other situations where a dog attacks is that pit bulls OFTEN ATTACK THEIR OWNERS, especially CHILDREN.
The dog bite issue should be treated completely separately.
The fact is that pit bulls kill more often.
What is your evidence that the dog in this story had been abused or specifically trained to fight?
So many stories are about the sweet, family pet, loved by the owners, played with by the children, until one day it snaps and kills.
I would like to see those numbers broken down by whether the victim was the dog’s owner or owner’s family.
It’s truly astonishing how often the pit bull attacks within its owner’s family, especially children if had often previously been very sweet with.
If you ever shot this dog, I would personally shoot you. This is a great dog.
Those are the situations that concern me as well. Pits can be very cute, and even without the hip-hop garbage, I suppose some people find a little cache in owning one.
But these nice little families with the nice little children, treating a pit as a lovable little fuzzball is a big mistake.
Pit Bulls are objectively the 2nd best dog in the world.
All other dogs tied for 1st hehehehe.
Note: Although I despise those dogs, I’m just kidding the pit owners for a laugh. It’s kind of like a Polish joke.
“shoot it. Shoot that son of a bitch,’ “ Kersbergen said.”

Then I'm sorry but that is not a pitbull and you've never owned more than one.
And seriously, lose the background story-telling, nobody is falling for it.
Spitting image of mine. Only I have not clipped his ears and mine has green eyes.
What’s got four legs, one arm, and a huge smile?
