The head of Georgia's national security council said Wednesday Russia has sent 50 tanks into the central Georgian city of Gori, despite an agreed-upon ceasefire calling on both sides to retreat to positions they held before fighting began six days ago.

Security council head Alexander Lomaia said that the tanks entered Gori about 9:45 a.m. local time, but there was no independent confirmation of his claim.

” An Associated Press reporter has seen a convoy of several dozen Russian military trucks and armored vehicles heading out of a key city deeper into Georgia. “

The “reporter outside the city of Gori saw the convoy speeding past and heading south. And Georgia’s Security Council chief says Russians bombed and looted Gori on Wednesday.”

Fox News showing the tanks heading into Gori, and going even deeper, may be heading for the capital.

“...I’m not so sure the Russians would want to risk all out war with the US...”

How, on earth, do you mean THAT?

“We could have at least 4-6 airborne combat brigades in Tblisi within 24 hours.”

Hopefully our policy will at least be to get in quietly, hook up with Georgians and ratf**k the The Russians to death with stuff the Georgians may not have.

Latest reports from BBC now say that the Russian column has turned off the road to the captial. Earlier reports said they were expected to turn off towards an abandoned Georgian military base and it looks like this happening now.

We need to put all ours on the table as well.

Just be careful. There are experts at setting traps. Last Lebanon War. Georgia taking the bait in Ossetia. They own the initiative here. Hopefully we have some brilliant military minds in the Pentagon setting to spring something. If freepers can figure them out in near real time, you know the Pentagon knows much sooner then that. What surprised me was the low caliper of aircraft they have used until now. They must have a bunch of top end fighters parked somewhere nearby just waiting for our air response.

yea, i suppose what we should really look for are additional reports of armor continuing to move through Gori towards Tblisi

FWIW - SkyNews is reporting the US has requested an emergency NATO meeting given the developments this morning

Earlier reports said they were expected to turn off towards an abandoned Georgian military base and it looks like this happening now.

Could have been a small flanking force to clear the base and hold it. Look for possibly a column of heavys to follow.

The Russian want the President of Georgia to quit.

I think the world no longer cares what Russia wants. They are abducting small children from Georgian families. Heard a live audio report describing it from a credentialed reporter on the scene.
