TORONTO A little over a week ago, the literary world was lauding novelist Stephenie Meyer, a Mormon stay-at-home mother, as the new J.K. Rowling amid the excitement surrounding the release of the fourth instalment in her "Twilight" teen fiction series, "Breaking Dawn."
Today, the bestselling book is the subject of a backlash that's prompted a group in the United States to organize a "return your book" protest.
On Amazon's U.S. website, a group of readers, led by a one-time bookstore employee, is urging former fans to return their copies of "Breaking Dawn" in order to deprive Meyer of royalties...

Isn’t it the case thought that modern feminists do view children and pregnancy as soul/health/time - sucking vampires. Given that, she is using the character’s pregnancy as a sort of mirror held up to society.
It’s one thing to fight for the “right” to have an abortion (and I can debate that topic all day), but to actively cheer it on is a mental illness.
Well, I’m afraid I’m not capable of judging vampire stories written for teenage girls. But I did have a look at Amazon, and it’s clear that the last novel in the series was polarizing. There are a lot of one star reviews and a lot of five star reviews.
I get the impression that the feminists and the pro-aborts are weighing in on it with all the one-star reviews. It’s war between more traditional girls who like romance and a happy ending, and future members of NOW who hate the idea of marriage and pregnancy.
Just my impression. I still have ZERO desire to read the books.
My 13 year old has read the first two and is in the middle of the third. However, I’ve been told (by a mom who has read it) not to get the 4th book for her as it has quite descriptive sex in it. I really don’t need my daughter reading that - even if it is in the context of marriage.
“There are a lot of one star reviews and a lot of five star reviews”
That is true of EVERY book on Amazon (probably including The Bible. You know, “too many cooks”). People just don’t waste their time reviewing books they thought were okay.
On Amazon, the price is discounted 45% (from $22.99 to $12.64).
I read the first couple of reviews (both negative) and it seemed that a major thrust of the criticism was that the series had focused on the sacrifice necessary in life and love. But in the last book the author made it all too easy. The protagonist got to keep both her lovers (one vampire and one werewolf), plus the baby .and there was no sacrifice necessary. She got it all through magic improbable based on the conceit of the world described in the prior books.
Like you, this is not the kind of book I would ever pick up, or have any interest in except for this thread.
Please add me to your list.
