Russia wants to redraw map of Europe in peace terms with Georgia
http://www.telegraph.co.uk ^ | 12 Aug 2008 | By Adrian Blomfield in Gori

President Medvedev said the EU peace plan contained "good principles to settle the problem," but that Russia would also add proposals and that it was "up to Georgia now". He said that President Saakashvili, whom he described as a "lunatic," had lied about his side's respect for a ceasefire during the conflict.

"You know, lunatics' difference from other people is that when they smell blood it is very difficult to stop them. So you have to use surgery," President Medvedev said.

Asked about the progress of the peace plan, President Sarkozy said: "The night is young. We are not at peace yet but we are at a stage of temporary cessation of hostilities, which is certainly significant." He added that the EU could provide peacekeepers to be stationed in South Ossetia if all sides agreed.

President Saakhashvili said that he would continue to regard Russian troops in the breakaway states as occupying forces. He said Georgia would refuse to be "broken to pieces" under any agreement. Georgia also disclosed that it had filed a lawsuit against Russia at the International Court of Justice for ethnic cleansing.

"Today Georgian ambassador to the Netherlands filed a law suit to the International Court of Justice," the secretary of Georgia's Security Council, Kakha Lomaia, said, "because of ethnic cleansing conducted in Georgia by Russia in 1993 to 2008."

Luis Moreno-Ocampo, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, said that he had also been contacted about the conflict, and may launch a preliminary investigation.

The news conference came shortly after Russian forces continued to shell the strategically important Georgian town of Gori, in an attack representing a continuation of Moscow's military offensive, even after President Medvedev had ordered a cessation to hostilities.

Medvedev is Putin’s buttboy. Anyone remember when they sat down after he was “elected” President, and he slavishly offers Putin the chair of President?

"You know, lunatics' difference from other people is that when they smell blood it is very difficult to stop them. So you have to use surgery," President Medvedev said.

Sounds to me like Medvedev has essentially admitted entrapping Georgia; and Russia possibly murdered So. Ossetians two weeks earlier, for the purpose. Additionally, Mevedev is mocking Georgia's military.

I guess the French needed their own version of Neville Chamberlain, and they found one!

Napoleon must be spinning in his grave.

One does wonder, though, when the Russian field commanders will start accepting orders directly from Putin rather than having the Russian President first mouth them.

At this time it looks like there are still doubters in the military.

Sounds like Russia is stalling for time right now. Maybe doing a little ethnic cleansing before they leave?

We should be sending stingers and tanker busters in the back door just in case they have trouble exiting the front door.

Georgia should acceptthe terms with the following stipulations:

1) Moscow reimburses Georgia for damage and the deaths of Georgian civilians
2) Moscow will never obstruct Georgia access to the Black Sea or delivery of oil/natural gas
3) Georgia will be admitted as a full member of NATO
4) Moscow will raise no objection to NATO membership for The Ukraine.

“Russia wants a buffer zone around these enclaves, from which all Georgian forces will be excluded, and is demanding that Georgia give a signed pledge never to use force in the regions again.”

Perfect set up again, Russia launches cross border incursions through its proxies, if Georgia moves to defend itself BAM!
They get steamrolled again.But......If we rebuild/aid Georgia’s Army into a Fully modern armed a force,(against that day)Great. But will the Russians “let us”?

Yeah, this thing is far from over. If the Russians gain control of S Ossetia they gain a staging area south of the Caucases. They may or may not attempt to finish the conquest right now, if they don’t you can bet they’ll be back on more trumped up charges.

If we can’t get past the German opposition to their entry into NATO we need to arm them such that they can better resist the next Russian foray.

It wouldn't matter if Georgia had the best equipped, best trained and best motivated Army on earth. They have a population that's about 3% of that of the USSR.

It’s no secret this guy is nothing but a lackey for Putin and doesn’t say a thing that hasn’t been vetted by the chief kleptocrat. Right now Putin is feeling very cocky, he’s just mugged one of his neighbors and he likes how it feels. He’s like an wild dog that’s just gotten it’s first taste of blood. He’ll be back with more grandiose plans and outrageous claims and it’s not gonna take long. Eventually, chicken killing dogs need to be put down.
