Seriously, this is all the more heroic because they are sitting ducks. And Russia can escalate this thing in a hurry. I guess they are counting on the idea that Russia does not want things to develop too quickly—but is that faith misplaced?

Poland is in NATO. If Russia attacks Poland, that will be the equivalent of an attack on the United States and the rest of Western Europe. There's no way Russia would risk that kind of a confrontation.
