Recent speculation about Republican presidential candidate John McCain's running mate has featured Virginia's 7th District Rep. Eric Cantor. Cantor -- a rising star in the Republican Party -- would bring to the GOP ticket youth, conservative credentials, formidable political skills, and a base of support in a battle ground state. Yet Cantor's limited experience may be a liability for the campaign, and it is not clear how Cantor would help McCain deal with the major challenges he would face if elected president.
Presidential candidates typically choose running mates who complement themselves, as Bill Clinton did with Al Gore in 1992, or compensate for a perceived weakness, as George Bush did by selecting Dick Cheney, an experienced Washington hand, in 2000. In both cases, the candidates seemed to form a unified team, sending a positive signal to voters and the media about the presidential candidate's competence and judgment. Cantor would address some of McCain's shortcomings -- particularly concerns about his age and the distrust (if not dislike) of many conservatives. Cantor's vigorous support of McCain, and the value McCain places on personal loyalty, could also form the basis of a strong partnership, though it is premature to say whether the two would be perceived as a unified team.

Cantor Ping.
I live in Virginia, and I don’t even know what Mr. Cantor looks like.
Could be a McCain tease for the conservatives before singing on Crist or Pawlenty.
I was disappointed not to see Eric Cantor not appearing on any of the Sunday morning talk shows.
I really want to see Tom Brokaw and George Stephanopolous put Cantor through his paces, in a hostile sort of interview.
Let’s see how he can do on that stage before we choose him a VP nominee.
Eric who?
I’m active in followng politics from MD, and never heard of this guy before all the McCain hype.
I agree. The fact that he has not been on the Sunday talk circuit yet leads me to believe he is not in the top three choices.
Google is your friend.
Type in “Eric Cantor” and then click on Images.
Next question?
bttt
Bless your heart! ;)
So?
Unfortunately, you may be on to something there.
Cantor is a viable, young conservative with stellar credentials. I could support him if McCain chooses him.
I've snooped at his voting record and it doesn't frighten me. Now, I'd like to see him interviewed and also making a speech. Just to get an idea.
I hope and pray it is not Crist.
We have rules at FreeRepublic.
Cantor Barak Obama -- a rising star in the Republican Democrat Party -- would bring to the GOP Liberals ticket youth, conservative liberal credentials, formidable political skills, and a base of support in a battle ground state. And CHANGE!
Barak Obama is the one the world has been waiting for, All bow to the Messiah!
Why is it that a young, smart, politicaly skilled Republican is too young and inexperienced, but Obama isn't?
Media bias? What media bias?
