The Russian Navy has confirmed that a section of its Black Sea Fleet is en route to the Georgian coastline. The task force includes a missile cruiser. Military officials insist the operation is to help refugees and is not part of an operation to blockade Georgia.
According to a source in the Russias defense ministry, three assault ships were earlier sent to the same destination.
This is not a sea-blockade, as a blockade would mean a state of war with Georgia, while we are not in a state of war, the source said.
Georgias National Security Council Secretary, Aleksandr Lomaya, earlier said that Russian ships have reached the Abkhazian port of Ochamchir.
Ukraine may bar Russia from Black Sea
Ukraines Foreign Ministry has announced that Russian ships returning from the Georgian shore may be refused permission to enter its territorial waters in the Black Sea.
The ministry says Ukraine doesnt want to be involved in the conflict between Russia and Georgia. It underlines that the move corresponds with the international law.

More: "Meanwhile, Moscow remains unconvinced about Ukrainian claims of neutrality.
Referring to the shooting down of a Russian Tu-22 bomber over Georgia, the Defence Ministry says the Georgian military would have needed a C-200 anti-aircraft system to carry out the attack.
According to Russia, the Georgian army did not possess such equipment before the conflict.
Only Russia and Ukraine are armed with C-200 anti-aircraft systems, which is leading Russian defence officials to suspect that Kiev may have sold the equipment to Georgia."
If Russian sources are quoting this, they must have run into a buzz-saw of AA they didn't expect.
Sorry..
Should have noted that the referance toward the Moskva and the Auusault Landing Ships came from the Turkish “Hurriyet”, which reports these ships hacve arrived at Novorossik..
If the turks start making comments, then it’s going to be fun.
Recall that one function of a Navy is to project national power. The Russians have read the same books that the US has.
As a side question, how long will this go on before the US is tangled up in it? Days? Weeks? Months? Or are we already in it?
I'm guessing that's a TU-22M Backfire rather than a TU-22 Blinder. If so, this was an expensive little adventure for Господин Pooty-Poot. They can't build planes like that any more.
Russia is restricting the flow of information and lying in order to blunt the response of the world to their actions. I’d say this is all coming out of the fascist playbook.
This could be a prelude to a similar projection of Russian power into the Eastern Ukraine. Foment a revolt by Russian citizens, and when the territorial government (Ukraine) sends in troops to restore order, Russia invades to protect its citizens. Putin has already made it clear that Russia considers Ukraine to be within (under) its sphere of influence.
As an aside I noticed that Google Maps of Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan are blank.
I think we’ve long since untangled themselves. What they’re doing now is just going through the motions that are guaranteed to result in nothing happening. That’s why Bush is spending his time behaving like a drunken tourist in Beijing.
Oh of course there's no state of war.
Image from the Georgian town of Gori, 80km from the capital, Tiblisi.
The U.S. media is doing a swell job of restricting the flow of information, too. Only one Sunday talking-head show mentioned the war ... and only in reference to what would Barak / McCain do.
bttt
Russia would lie?
When don’t they?
I have been amazed at how little this has been covered. It appeared to me to be a BIG story from the beginning, but it was hard to find anything about it on TV. If not for FR I would not have known it was going on for quite some time.
susie
When their lips are not moving (and maybe they’re still lying even then).
The turks have already offered to supply electricity to Georgia.
CNN wolf blitzer had the Georgian President on live and treated him like he was testifying before congress. It is just disgusting.
Reagen could never have dealt with the Soviets the way he did back then these days..If he had said “Tear down this wall!’ today, the media would have said, “He is fomenting WWIII; he is a war monger!” It is a different world now.
Wake up people , we have a Fifth column here and it is the Media.
fox news is covering very little, have their usual brain-dead female anchors on who nothing politically or about history or foreign policy...and of course the endless Edwards affair.
Having been there, and remembering the 80's quite well, the media said exactly that about Reagan and worse. They loved the Soviet Union (just misunderstood) and despised Reagan, who they always accused of being an addled war monger.
Comment:
Excellent question.
On a side note: I wonder if Pooty Poot consulted with that brilliant know-it-all world President B. Hussein Obama, getting his permission before striking Russia's tiny neighbor.
The House Democrats are fiddling while Rome so to speak burns.
I did not know that. That’s better than nothing.
But I was thinking more about the black sea and russian ships in it. The bosporous and the dardanelles are controlled by the turks. The turks and the ukraines together could theoretically blockade russian ports.
