Iraqi FM: We are close to reach security pact with U.S.

U.S. and Iraqi negotiators are "very close" to reaching a long-term security deal that will decide the fate of American forces in Iraq, the foreign minister said Sunday. Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said the Iraqis were insisting on the inclusion of a "very clear timeline" for the pullout of U.S.-led forces.

The main sticking points have been over the authorization of U.S. military operations, immunity for American soldiers and sovereignty issues, Zebari said, adding that both sides "are compromising on all these issues."

In remarks to reporters, Zebari said that talks were "on the brink" of agreement. "They have achieved substantial progress," he said, according to the AP. "We are very close to reaching a final agreement."

Zebari said he hoped an agreement could be ready to present to Iraqi lawmakers for approval "when the parliament convenes ... hopefully in early September."

The sooner that country can stand on its own two feet and we can get the hell out of there for good the better!

Yup. We’ve done enough for those ingrates. Just like clockwork, 10 years from now they’ll be bitching about us like Japan, Germany and South Korea.

Guess you don’t understand it is best we protect our interest in 356 billion barrels of oil rather than retake from another terorist or dictator.

So clean up your act.

And if the Iraqis request that we leave?

As long as we have bases there, yes.

It isn’t as simple as that. The U.S. doesn’t own Iraq. It is a sovereign nation. When the Iraqi government say we want all combat troops out then there is no alternative.

That’s part of the negotiations and it’s pretty much guaranteed we’ll maintain a substantial presence there as well as in Qatar.

We didn’t conquer Iraq to leave after a few years. We are constructing huge fortified bases from which we can project military power anywhere in the Mid-East. That is part of the reason (though unstated) we went in. With Iraq as a US base and our military presence there, we can guarantee stability in the region and Israwl’s security. Plus, there’s all that oil.
