Keeping It Reille
The New York Times ^ | August 9, 2008 | Maureen Dowd

Posted on 08/09/2008 10:49:28 PM PDT by Aria

John Edwards’s confession was a little bit breathtaking.

Not the sex stuff. That happens here all the time.

And certainly not covering up the sex stuff. That happens here all the time, too. First people uncover; then they cover up. Nobody’s ever had sex with that woman until, suddenly, they have.

The stunning admission Edwards made to ABC’s Bob Woodruff, and in a written statement from Chapel Hill on Friday afternoon, was that he’s a narcissist.

He admitted that wallowing in “self-focus” out on the trail and thinking you’re “special” can result in a solipsism that “leads you to believe you can do whatever you want, you’re invincible and there’ll be no consequences.”

Auto-psychoanalysis by the perp. That’s really rich. When Bill Clinton acknowledged an affair, after equally adamant denials, he simply went into an old-fashioned spiral of penitence, his allegedly long, dark night of his alleged soul.

Even in confessing to preening, Edwards was preening. His diagnosis of narcissism was weirdly narcissistic, or was it self-narcissistic? Given his diagnosis, I’m sure his H.M.O. would pay.

The creepiest part of his creepy confession was when he stressed to Woodruff that he cheated on Elizabeth in 2006 when her cancer was in remission. His infidelity was oncologically correct.

Edwards and Obama are birds of a feather. The Democratic Party is populated by narcissists. I usually don't give credit to Maureen Dowd but I appreciate her setting us for once - all straight!

Apparently Elizabeth has forgiven him. But I am very puzzled that :

1. He admits the affair, but said he didn’t love the girl. So apparently she’s just a cheap *&*&*, and we’re supposed to think it’s not so bad?

2. He admits the affair, but says he’s not the father of the baby. So we’re supposed to think it’s not so bad that he didn’t father a child with her? maybe they did “safe sex”?

3. He admits the affair, but says it happened when his wife’s cancer was in remission. So then we’re supposed to feel better about it, that he didn’t leave his sick wife when she needed him?

4. He knows nothing about any possible money paid to her or to that other guy who worked for his campaign. That strains believablility because it’s his job to know where his money is and where it’s going. He could be in legal trouble if campaign money was used in this, so if his guys kept him in the dark, he better get up to speed pretty quick.

I really doubt that MoDo is any less full of herself than Edwards is of himself.

Two peas in a lefty pod.

John Edwards knows two Americas: one where his marriage is a facade for his selfishness and one where he schmoozed with Rielle Hunter! What a great cad!

What do you say of a man who cheated on his wife while she had cancer? There ain't nothing special about him. No - it was all about HIM! Obama the Himbo would agree.

John Edwards lives in two Americas.

There’s the one where he had an affair in 2006, stopped it, and admitted it to his wife, who has been dealing with it ever since.

But then there’s the OTHER America where he started over again with his slut, knocked her up, hid her away and paid her hush money while she had his love child.

Well, John came out and told us about the one America, when’s he going to come clean about the other?

That is not an off-the-cuff admission of guilt. That is a well thought out excuse that could happen to almost anyone.

Note the use of “you” four times in the above quote.

No Edwards - that could not happen to ME because I am not a slimy jerk like YOU.

Maureen couldn’t figure out who he was years ago, when he was making millions suing innocent doctors?

Somebody wrote her 4 checks, each for $100,000. This broad lives in a $3 million dollar house.

Somebody (I missed the name of the source—dang it!) said of this Reille that she really loves him and “after it's all over she wants to marry him”. I can guess what the “all over” comment means and it doesn't make me think good things about either Edwards or his mistress. They must both be very evil people.

All those years Mo spent sitting at bars, hoping she’d get hit on. Anyone. Truck drivers even. And Druck gets plowed by Silky Pony.

Cougars never forget.

I read that also - that the broad is waiting for Liz to die. Edwards must have given her reason to think this would happen.

“As I have been saying for the last five years, there are ‘two Americas,’” Edwards alleged. “In one of these Americas I am the people’s tribune fighting for social justice. In the other, I am a conniving liar.”

Edwards blamed his “conniving liar” persona on “a closed-minded culture that demands hypocrisy from its great men.” “Men like me are under severe stress as we sacrifice our precious time and immense talents to nurture and uplift the American people,” Edwards claimed. “In earlier times, such men were granted more leeway. President Kennedy, for example, had many mistresses. He was never forced to humiliate himself before the American people. To the contrary, he got his head on the half-dollar. The way I’m being treated is so not fair.”

Note that this so-called admission is couched in very nebulous, legalistic terms. It is not nearly so much an admission as a excuse, as you suggest, an effort to convince the rest of us that this could happen to any ordinary Joe.

Some gullible Dems might accept that excuse, but most of us still come away shaking our heads and still viewing Edwards as the scum of the earth.
