I would answer that the NYT needs to read this article for a clearer understanding of what S. Ossettia is and is not, for starters.

Interesting set of articles from difference sources, with divergent views.
Who will be found to carry the keys to the truth of the matter regarding where Russia stands regarding wanting to reestablish their dominion over a vast empire. Regardless of who appears to be the puppet players, Putin and his gang want to resurrect the Soviet Empire as far as I can see.
And oil and gas are a key to this goal. And the region is smack dab in the central region of where these resources flow.
It won't be the first time the Russians use petty cultural squabbles to attempt regaining lost ground.
